Is Dual/Double Layer important?

I'm planning to build a new system for myself and was wondering if it is worth it to get a Dual Layer DVD+/-RW. My main priority is to get something that is efficient and will last me for many years to come.

I've read an article on Anandtech saying Pioneer DVR108 is the best DVD+/-RW out. While it doesnt offer double layer, this NEC does for about the same price. However, I read from consumer comments on Newegg that the NEC gets very loud when operating and pretty much drowns out the rest of the PC and I figured, thats pretty darn loud.

So what do you guys think? If not these two, is there something better for <$100?
 
I've got this guy here. Not sure if its techniclly better, but I've been happy with it, and most people seem to like lite on. Not too loud and burns good disks. I'm not sure how important double layer is, but you can get them for under a hundred bucks so why not. I like to be able to back up all my music on one disk as well as backing up whole dvds is nice. Though its still hard to get media I'm sure it will pick up soon.
 
Yeah I have black Lite-On drives. Just get the dual layer drive so you'll have it if you ever need it.
 
I have the 8X version of that NEC DVD drive. It's been great; no coasters out of 20+ DVD burns. I also have a LiteON 52X CDRW but becase of a buddy's recommendation, I thought I'd give the NEC a try for my first DVD-RW.

Every CDRW / DVDRW I've had was more or less a bit on the "noisy" side, but "....drowns out the PC..." sounds a little over the top. I have no complaints, and my system is relatively quiet.

My current system has three optical drives; A Toshiba DVD-ROM for reading / ripping, a LiteON 52X CDRW, and the 8X dual layer NEC DVD-RW. I've been really happy with how they've all worked out.

It's not too much of a price premium to go for a double-layer drive over a non-double layer drive, so I'd suggest you go in for one. The Benq DW1620 has been getting some good reviews.
 
the only problem is that theres almost no media support. prices are great, just no media. im gonna wait until they become mainstream and have all the bugs tweaked out of em.
 
Also DLs are very slow nowdays. x2.4 double layer it is something close to 1 hour of burning plus 1 DL dvd x2.4 is about 6 pounds. Although there is a new Plextor that has DL at x4, but probably it costs a fortune and who knows when you get these dl dvd x4 disks at reasonable price.
 
Astra, the NEC3500A, Pioneer 108 and the Benq 1620 (with a soon-to-be-released firmware update) write to Mitsubishi 2.4X +R DL discs at 4X.Full 8.5GB in about 23-24 minutes.

OK. Let's hope the firmware will be out soon.

Though, IMHO, I would not burn with a speed that my media officially do not support.
I can burn verbatium x8 on my plextor x12, but I don't do it. I do not want in a couple of years when I cannot read a particular DVD or CD, go bitching around about plextor being a lousy drive or verbatium media being a bad quality media, just because I used it in a way it was not designed to be used :)

btw, benq dvd buners are awful.
 
Wow, I didn't know about it. I am sure it is going to be 20% or more cheaper than plextor.
It would be a definitly a burner of _my_ choise :)

And I'm sure you have the reviews to back up your assertion that Benq DVD burners are awful :rolleyes: . CDRLabs have a review up of the DW1620, I suggest you go read it.
