ok here are my system specs...

AMD 64 3400+
Sapphire x800 xt 256 MB
Corsair XMS pc3200 1 gig
Shuttle SK83G

This is my second x800 cuz my first one was busted and for some reason my graphics still blow. People say that I should be getting massive FPS in CS:S but its always choppy at hell. I play with all the settings all the way up so I turned them all down and it still does the same thing with no change in FPS. I have the 5.1 drivers because those are what work the best for me. I am pretty sure this card is not broken but maybe something I am just doing wrong. ANy ideas cuz I dont want to ahve paid so much for a card that isnt getting me any better than my geforce 4.

Is the performance choppy in other games as well...or just in CS:S. If it is only CS:S than it isn't the card that is the problem.

No its not up to par with other peoples systems and cards that are the same as mine. I still get choppy parts when I play Tribes Vengeance. HL2, Doom 3, and CS:S.

try completely uninstalling the video drivers and reinstalling them, you may have a corrupt video driver.

I take that back. Here is what leads me to believe its not my card. In HL2 with all settings on max at 1280 by 1024 I get like 200+ FPS but in CS:S with all settings on low I get liek 40.

I do and I get the same exact FPS and stuttering on when its off both outside and inside source, but its on in HL2 and I get great FPS.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling chipset drivers, and then uninstalling/installing drivers with driver cleaner pro (follow directions on how to use in its faq). Maybe this will help you.

You could be having heat issues with your shuttle. Those little things get toasty.

The 5.1 Cats have weird bugs with CS:S and HL2 from what I understand.

Benchmarks dont mean squat in game performance/smoothness...

Yeah, but they do allow you to compare your results to other people who have very similar PC's so you can start narrowing down the cause of the issue.

Try using the Cat 4.12's, My friend was talking to me about drivers and he said a lot of people were disappointed with the 5.1's. I have an XTPE and I got an extra 7 or 8 frames in Doom3 upon installing the 4.12's.

Ok, yeah I tried updating my drivers and that just made it worse but I will try the older ones and see if that helps.

You said it yourself, you get 100+ FPS in HL2 but in CS:S it doesn't work. Updating your drivers won't do anything then. There is something fundamentally wrong with either your HL2/CSS installation or you simply don't have video but internet bandwidth lag.

Yeah I think it might be my CS:S so someone else told me to delete certain files then uninstall/reinstall and that should work.

dont just go deleting random files, simply do an uninstall with the included uninstall utility.

Also the person who suggested it might be a heat related problem is right, you should check the temperatures on your video card and make sure it is doing ok in that department as well.

Ok so here is a new development. I went into my control panel for my video card and turned everything up to the highest it would go, AA, AF, Vsync, then I went into CS:S and turned everything up there as well. Played in a server for about an hour and it was smooth as hell, I got about 60 FPS constant but I can live with that if all the settings were on max. I thought that had fixed it but then I went to play Tribes Vengeance and Doom 3 and those are both insanely choppy now. It seems as if there is no way to satisfy all my games. I know that Doom 3 is D3D and that HL2 and CS:S are OpenGL so maybe if I fool around with the settings for all those things I can fix this but does anyone know what Tribes is? Is it OpenGL or D3D?

P.S. Heat is not an issue. The highest I have seen my card get up to is 70 degrees C which is mighty hot but it doesn't run any cooler with the case off and I don't get any artifacting at all.

You actually have that mixed up a bit. Doom 3 is OpenGL, HL2 and Tribes are both Direct3D.

Umm.. if you are trying to make games run smoother and less choppy then maxing AA is exactly the OPPOSITE of what you want to do.

Dude he was testing it since he CSS ran fine with AA and AF now he wanted to see if it was fine for all games.
