If im using itunes to upload music to my ipod, is there a way to reverse the process and download the mp3s i uploaded to it?
 
yup, iPod2iTunes, iPod Agent (my iPod ripper of choice), and many more

just search google for "iPod Agent"

unless you have 3rd party software loaded up you can't just browse the ipod like a HD as the files are hidden and not easily accessable again for copyright issues it was setup that way..now if you use it as a HD and copy the files over then yes it will work but you won't be able to play them on the ipod either...it is one or the other with the stock Apple SW
 
which makes me very very mad...

the guy at the apple store i asked specifically "can i access the music from my computer, as an external hard drive" and he said yes, but didn't mention that the songs are renamed and moved around in a totally nonsensicle manner, thus rendering it useless

ummm? just show hidden files and go to "ipod control" or something like that...atleast on windows, i was able to recover all my songs after a hard drive died. :)
 
yea mine shows the normal naming system in ipod_controls or whatever it is, the hidden folder, its just they are in a nonsensical file system lol, so iPod Agent is easier :)
 
He probably meant you can play them off of the iPod through iTunes on your computer's speakers, which you can do.

use the search and search for "*.mp3 *.aiff" or any other format you have on their in the windows search

you apparantly dont own an ipod. when you go into the ipod hd and open the hidden ipod_controls/music folder
there are then about 30 more folders named F00, F01, F02...

in those folders are about 80 random songs each, not of the same album or anything., some of the songs are named normally, but most are named 3058.mp3, 1185.mp3, etc.

You can view the details (artist, title) but that doesn't help because you dont know what folder anything is in.

Thus, by a rio karma or some other mp3 player
 
i'm probably beating a dead horse by now because there have been enough responses already, but if you download TinkerTool you can view all hidden files (inc. the hidden ipod_control folder) and chance a whole bunch of other 'hidden' prefrences on your Mac. just thought i'd add my two cents....

I do not own an iPod but I have done the above for 2 people. I am aware of the folders named "Fxx" But it's still possible to get the music off the drive
 
just copy all the songs out of the ipod_control folder to some place on your harddrive and then add them back into itunes. itll sort it all out and name them based on the title. works perfectly. i dont know what kind of problems you guys are having...

Yes i know that. However im on a laptop with a small hard drive. When i bought the ipod i wanted to be able to keep all my music on it. This works fine when i play songs through itunes. However i can't burn the music to a cd, I can't send people music, i can't play it in winamp. I wish, i really wish someone made a program so i could access the music through explorer, or an explorer like interface, so i could manipulate the files as if they were on an external hard drive, and in a sensible order.
 
In Windows XP/2000 you can use the search function to search the actual ID3 tag of any mp3. All you have to do is search the hidden folders on the iPod with the band's name or whatever you are looking for. They all show up ... it's as easy as dragging and dropping.

Mike, if you'd like to do that you'll have to have the music stored twice on the iPod. Once under the invisible folders and another directly on the hard drive.
Click the iPod icon in itunes (lower right of iTunes window).
Enable Firewire disk mode.
Create a folder on the iPod called iTunes Music (or whatever).
Go into iTunes preferences and click advanced.
Choose the iTunes Music folder you just created as the location for your songs.
Shuttle all the songs into that folder however you'd like (with one of the iPod ripping tools or whatever) or rip them directly into that folder off your cds, etc.
iTunes will use the iPod as an external hard drive and as a music player.. the downside is you use twice the amount of space.

I personally wouldn't suggest having the songs ONLY on your iPod anyways.. if it breaks or gets dropped or something happens to the drive, all that work is gone. I went and got an external drive that I store my music on, and just sync the iPod from that.

I know but that cuts your storage in half. I know all these ways around it im just syaing, the ipods storage scheme sucks. My brotehrs karma connects to a network so anyone on the network can use his music any way they choose. Thats awesome

and you can do that with music sharing in itunes as well

yes, but again the same problem of you can't burn or copy the music, as you can with the karma. I know that technically you can do everything, but the ipod makes it a pain in the ass, whereas other players like the karma offer up the files in a nice organized format for you to do whatever you want.
