iPad2’s Used in School Pilot Program

That really is a good point, im a freshman but i remeber going out side playing out on the playground slidding on the slides, god those were the best days there wasnt any stress now everyone one has ipods and ipads. Iv asked my parents about the first cell phones, ig they were huge. I didnt get my first cell phone till i was in 5th grade which luckly im more mature for my age but i honestly didnt think i needed one. I think they are nice now that im starting to drive but i didnt need one back then. I think were getting into technology wayyyy too much. What was wrong with the old days? Nothing. Plus i dont think young kids are mature enough too have them. They could leave them laying out in the yard or drop them. My geography teacher today said that credit card companies are targetting 10 year olds there not ready!

This is my POV:
I think that this was a huge waste of money.

Now before you start flaming me, let me explain why.
1. even if tehy're "careful" with their ipads, little kids are going to drag them with them out in the mud, and tehy're going to want to use them while eating candy/fruit/other-sticky-stuff, and then they're going to want to wash them by dipping them in the sink/pool/etc. In short, little kids gennerally dont need fragile toys like this. Hell as a kid I played in the yard with ROCKS and at times broke them, and I was not considered violent! There's also the fact they will leave these lieing around because mommy yelled "who wants cookies?" including out in the rain, or int eh driveway where daddy (or whoever) will pull in and run over the device...

Alternately:
If the iPads are kept at the school and taken care of by professionals, only given to the kids during the class (think "computer lab") that solves the problem.

These all have insurance on them, just like the ~100K Macbooks being used by the state. If these start getting killed in mass quantities, Apple is eating the cost.

I agree. I think kids should have fun so they can have less stressful lives.

I got my first cell phone when I was 18. It was a basic kyocera phone in 2003. I used that phone for 3 years and upgraded to a motorola L2. I maybe use 200 minutes a month and about 700 texts (90% to my fiance).

Dude wanna come over and play hopscotch!?

Hopscotch? Screw that, lets get some sticks and use our imagination. I got dibs playing the wizard.

Dammit! I never get to be the wizard :(

For the first time in years, I kinda feel sorry for apple...

Now we're talkin! lol. I used to do this most of the time (even after I got a Nintendo!)
When exactly did kids stop being born with the ability to play "make believe"?

Why the heck do so many people just decide that kids destroy everything quickly? Did you all grow up as a bunch of hooligan children that just smashed things because your parents were in jail?

I work in a school district, the kids beat the living shit out of the laptops...

Because those teachers are just getting paid so much fucking money they're bleeding the system dry... sounds like you've been looking at Wisconsin propaganda. While I'll agree administrators tend to be hugely overpaid, they really make up a small percentage of overall funds unless its a tiny school system.

It's not so much that the teachers are making a lot, but rather a lot of teachers (who shouldn't) are making anything.

Have you looked at some of the classes offered lately? You'll see things like "Using iPads to Promote Equality in America," "Comparisons - Critically Analyzing Differences Between Potato Chip Brands," and "Why Eating at McDonalds will Send You To Hell."

Are you posting this from a phone?

Even if every kids smashes two or three iPads in the first year, Apple is still getting a good deal on this. They are getting paid to have their hardware used in a pilot program that could affect future students and lead to much larger orders and more durable hardware.

Just think, a bunch of kids in third world countries have XO laptops and they have been managing OK without even having clean surfaces to rest them on very often.

I didn't get my first cell phone until i was 18 and it was a phone that had only 2 lines of monochrome display. No wonder the world is getting fat and messed up; technology is abolishing outside play time and excercise with gadgets that leave kids idle and detached from social activities. Oh wait, nevermind, kids are now super-social with Facebook and ultra popular having 10,000+ friends on their facebook page 9_9.

It's getting sad that newborn babies have Facebook pages created by their parents already. Thank mom and/or dad for breaching your online privacy/anonymity.

Brings back memories? Hell, we still do stuff like this. We take chapstick, melt it down, add food coloring, smear it on our face, then we do night ops. Like sneak into someone's tent and pull random pranks.

.......It's really boring being deployed to Afghanistan sometimes.

No clue. I still play "make believe" by role playing. I don't see the issue with doing it as an adult so kids should be able to do it.

I also played more outside than I played my NES and SNES. It was just more fun to play army men, make believe or explore. Well, I lived in the country so exploring involved the woods, 4-wheelers, bikes, lakes, ponds, etc. I guess now-a-days that would be way too much for kids.

Maybe it is how they value the item? For a materialistic society, it can just be 'replaced.' Education may be more important in the 3rd world nation.

I want to do this stuff but a lot of people are more interested in partying/drinking/going out/being "adults". Luckily I have a wonderful girl who is not interested in only doing those things.

I wrote a college paper on my cell phone last semester so there's no excuse for that post IMO. Something tells me he is simply an example of our fine education system.

Wow, I would not have had the patience to write a paper on my phone. I would have wrote it by hand instead of using my phone.
