alright so i bought a new computer and i put windows xp pro on it and connected my exsisting cable line to the back of the computer and for some reason its not working i tried everything i can think of and it wont work does anyone have any ideas???

Well for starters, it's the middle of the night and you expected a reply in under an hour?

Second, you didn't say what type of machine you are using, what OS, and we are unable to read your mind over the internet to figure out what "everything you could think of" consists of.


So with all that in mind... is your computer plugged in and turned on?
 
If you wiped a laptop..and installed XPpro...
Did you install all the drivers? Is the network adapter actually showing up in Device Mangler? Or do you have a bunch of "?" unknown devices?

Do you have a router in between your broadband modem and the laptop? I hope so..because if you "just installed XP" on it and right away plugged it in..without all windows updates, quality updated antivirus, and some sort of firewall protection (at the very minimum XPsp2 firewall), with a blank Administrator password, within about 30 seconds I'd consider your PC infested..and I'd want to format it again.

If you were trying to plug directly into a cable modem...and the modem had been plugged into something else..many cable modems remember the MAC of the device that was connected to it. Power off the cable modem for a few minutes so it will forget the MAC, once it powers up it will learn the MAC of the new device plugged into it.
 
I bet the cable modem is pervisioned to the mac of you other pc
Do you have a router setup with the modem?
If not you might have to call your ISP and give them the back of your new pc
