Installed modem, lost video

My wife and I recently moved, and since it will be a week before my isp will have my dsl ready, I've had to use dial up. I installed a modem, powered on, and found that my pci video card that I use for my second monitor had quit working. I shut down, removed the modem, restarted, and had the same problem. I have an abit nf7-s v2, a barton 2500, and the pci card is a Geforce 4 mx 420. The modem is some old junker I snatchd out of an HP, has a Conexant chip on it.

Any ideas?
 
Well I'm new to this, but it sounds to me like you might have a resource conflict between the 2 pci devices, check your device manager and see what it tells you....I'm curious to see what anyone else might think about this, like I said I'm kinda new
 
I knew I forgot something. Device manager says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
 
I'm gonna have to agree with Stargazer. See if you can change IRQ's (interrupts) in the BIOS anywhere- one or both cards is probably so old it's causing an IRQ conflict and doesn't know how to share.
 
That device manager error code usually means there is a driver problem, if you cant find a resource conflict then try going to the manufacturers web site and download the latest drivers for that modem.
 
This problem happens due to the IRQ resource conflict mentioned above. This happened to my GF's comp when I put it together for her. Modem in, no video (9600Pro AGP though).

I couldn't change the IRQ in bios and ended up just returning the mobo and got a new one.

Did removing the modem allow the video to start working again?
