Install ubuntu without cd drive or usb

I want to install ubuntu server on a old pc.

It has no cd drive (ide only I only have sata)
Dosent seem to support usb boot

So can I install ubuntu (in some form) on the hard disk via another computer then boot off this hard disk and install it to the same disk??

Or am I living in a dream world!
 
Move hard drive to new computer ----> Install Linux ----> Move hard drive to old computer.


For the most part, it should work. Especially if you're using a common easy to use binary distro.
 
couldn't he install some type of boot manager that will allow him to boot via USB?
 
unetbootin can image a hard drive.

move the drive to another pc, set up your partitions (i normally go with 100mb /boot, 64gb for /, and the rest for home) but add an extra 2gb ext4 partition at the end. use unetbootin to write the Ubuntu image to this partition. also add all your most common installed stuff to here, like drivers and... well just drivers, Ubuntu handles everything else.

put the drive in old machine and you should be good to go.. you may have to set boot flag on the partition. if you are lucky, when Ubuntu installs, it will detect this partition as an os and you will have set your pc up with a recovery partition, like crappy laptops have.

also, don't use Ubuntu 11.04. its horrible. 11.10 beta is a lot better, but i don't like unity, so i would recommend pinguy if you have 2gb+ram, or lubuntu if the machine is older

edit: use Linux mint instead of ubuntu, and pinguy instead of mint if you have a fast (2gb+ dual core) computer
