finally got my vive hooked up - WOW! incredibly immersive. even standing in the vive portal with my fear of heights tested me a bit.

i looked up how to enable super sampling and that line is not in my steamvr.vrsettings file. maybe b/c i only played demos? lightsaber deal was closest to a game i got tonight.

tried to purchase several times from viveport, several ways, always gave me the "currently not able to take payment of this type" - bummer. wanted to load up on some cheap demo type stuff.

very impressed so far.

You need to put in the supersampling line yourself. Make sure that there is no comma after the line if its the last, and if its not the last, make sure there is a comma after it:
How to Sharpen HTC Vive Visuals with Supersampling - Road to VR

If you want to try a cool demo that shows a bit what it can do (after you try the Lab of course), try Budget Cuts. You really feel you enter a virtual world there!

thanks for the heads up. is 2.5 too rich for the 1070?

i'll try budget cuts for sure.

how do you get audio to come through the desktop speaker system vs ear buds?

2.5? Depends on game. 2.0 is most common used with 1070/1080 and even then in some cases it can be too much. When you start to see reprojection (looks like a lag when you move), dial it down. Make two copies of the steamVR files, so you can switch faster. Some games doesn´t like the SS tweak. If you plan to use Revive, some of the content there will run poorly (like Henry) if you use SS tweak.

You can choose where audio comes through in the SteamVR settings under Audio (use the one on desktop monitor where you see green versions of your headset, lighthouses, controllers etc. and not the one inside VR). There you can also choose to mirror audio if you whish to have it played on your ear buds and your speaker system.

I have it set so it uses my headset when I use VR and reverts to my desktop speakers when I exit SteamVr.

Both 2.0 and 2.5 are way too high for a 1070.

At 2.0 you are trying to render the equivalent of 2 4k screens at 90fps. 2.5 is the same as rendering 4 4k screens at 90fps.

1.2-1.4 is more reasonable for a 1070.

So far my biggest gripe is the SDE.

Love VR. Tons of games look fun.

Some games you can get away with higher SS if you don't mind switching it back and forth. You can see how much headroom you have on the performance charts in Steam VR settings.

I had a hell of a time in Zombie Training Simulator. Also hurt for a few days. I found it funny how I'd avoid/walk around the table. They give you a table with meat/lantern/grenades on it.

Yes :) Some games you can use with higher amount of SS (around 11 mark):

A lot of the VR games don´t require much resources. It depends also how much reprojection affects the game and you. Cockpit games and seated games can be more forgiving with reprojection. Especially now with Async reprojection available. People are experimenting a bit in Elite Dangerous with Async reprojection on, always on reprojection enabled (constant 45fps@90hz) and interleaved reprojection off. You can push the settings a bit more it seems. :)

I'm shocked how much people get hung up on SS on the VIVE. Even as a guy who loves his to death - these videos are grossly misleading to anyone who doesn't own one. The SDE makes these images look WAY worse in actual use.

I only really ever notice SDE when the screen is on, but black. Then you can kind of see the subpixels a bit.

Never bothers me when playing an actual game.

I don´t think they are ment to be a perfect representation of the image shown in the HMD, but rather the improvement of the image with different SS levels.

People are hung up on SS for good reasons often. Especially in Elite Dangerous it adds much to the gameplay, since reading the text on the consoles is important for the game. SS do make the games sharper and also removes a lot of the aliasing in the games and as you probably have noticed, aliasing is much more pronounced in VR. :)
