anyone every taken the plunge and tried to upgrade the mxm video card in the intel imac?

this is pretty esoteric - but when the 4850m was released i started thinking about it. it'd be theoretically possible to swap out the 8800gs; but then there's the bios problem and whatever other challenges with voltage/heat, type II vs. type III mxm and whatnot.

Just throwing the idea out there - any thoughts?

i would call the apple store talk to one of there techs. might be able to just swap the cards out and the drivers.

Practically speaking, you can't really do it. MXM cards for Windows systems won't work, because they're looking for a BIOS and not EFI (not to mention drivers that usually won't exist in OS X). And upgrading with official Apple MXM cards isn't really an option, as they're not sold individually.

talk about an iron curtain. apple techs, while i am sure are very nice people irl, are artful practitioners of the stonewall school of verbal judo at work

I know this is the truth but remain surprised there is so little experimentation with apple computers. sager is selling the 4850 ala carte although efi/bios who knows.

I do know that there are now official 4870 cards for Mac Pro, so probably 4850 too

Those are PCI Express cards, not MXM; and no, there's no 4850 card. There will be a GeForce GTX 285 (again PCIe for the Mac Pro) in June.
