I am pretty well stumped reguarding a problem that my computer is having currently. I will start with the specs.
Processor: Athlon 64 3800+
Mb: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
Video: MSI Geforce 6800 ultra AGP
Ram: 1 gb Corsair XMS 3200
HD: Western Digital 74 gig raptor
Sound: Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
OS: XP pro
All drivers are the most current version.
I actually work in the IT and computer repair field when I am not in school so I have a decent amount of diagnostic experience but I cant figure this one out. The computer runs just fine in all applications other than those using 3d graphics. When playing games the computer will occasionally stall and be non-responsive for a couple of seconds. During this time the status indicator lights on my Ram do not move which indicates no data going through them. Occasionally when the computer resumes functioning the motherboard speaker will give a beep, like a post beep right when it begins to respond again.
The games that are affected most are Unreal Tournament 2004, ground control 2 and Counterstrike source. At least those are the games that I have been playing recently that were affected. Oddly Half Life 2 hangs a lot less than counterstrike source does.
I am beginning to wonder whether my video card is defective. I am probably going to try a fresh Windows install in the near future to see if that might solve my problems.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
<edit> I should add that I am seeing a bit of video artifacting but that is most likely due to the temperature of my un airconditioned room. The temp is not the cause of the problem though because it hangs at much more reasonable temperatures as well. The system does nothing like this under non 3d stress testing.
