okay so I got a psp and it is the firmware version 1.50 Now...what can i do pertaining to hacking? Can I only emulate other game systems such as snes, gba, etc. or can I actually copy a psp game onto a memory card and play it?
 
make sure you do not update!!!

and if you put a newer game in there, it will automatically update (i think) so watch out. However, if you don't update, you miss out on things like a web browser, .wma support, and more in-depth settings.

I think most games tell you before they actually update the firmware. I know for sure Burnout and GTA do.
 
Awesome! I got mine for xmas(v2.01:() :D Really neat little device huh? So much stuff shoved into one little thing. And the graphics are AMAZING. I just ordered a 1Gb SD card from newegg, so i'll probably put my favorite songs on there and some cool racing videos :) I already have a slight scratch on my screen though :( Can't see it at all during gameplay, but I know its there. GTA:LCS is fun as hell. It has all the things that made VC and SA cool (shooting out tires,bikes,getting out of a moving vehicle etc.. ) shoved into the best city out of all of them. Burnout Legends is awesome as well, lovin every second of it. I'm going to get Ridge Racer soon....Anyways, enjoy!

you just put the program on your memory stick, as a file, and you enter the directory in the web browser to get to it. it looks like this:

file:/psp/common/x5/index.html

so its just reading an html page from your memory card, but it works like a program. It doesnt modify your psp in any way, and you can take it off as easily as you put it on.

you don't need to be online, but you need a web browser to do it.
 
Woohoo: My wife could not find me an 360 but she got me a PSP. Im having a blast with it. My 2 most favorite games that I own are Populopus and Tokobot. I LOVE my wife. I actually typed all of this on my PSP.

hopefully by sd you mean the company sandisk and you ordered a memory stick pro duo and not a secure digital(sd) memory card. since the psp takes only memory stick duo
 
this is actually my second PSP. My first one, which I recieved for christmas, is 2.01. I really like the easy to use web browser on it and the fact that the background is customizable. Also I only have 1 dead pixel on the version 2.01. THe 1.50 has about 10. I am now at a crossroad.

My options are:
1. keep 1.50 return 2.01 and use the homebrew software
2. return the 1.50 keep 2.01 and wait for it to be hacked...i heard their making progress.


oh yeah...another thing...how hard would it be to exchange the lcd panels? So I can have the panel with 1 dead pixel on the 1.50 firmware. Or switch out the internals holding the OS?

I looked this over and Im hesistant in starting this...mainly because it doesnt show putting everything back in. The guy talks about popping off the lcd using force from a flathead. How is it put back...pushing it really hard? yeah it looks kinda tricky and i dont wanna get stuck with a brick.

another thing i have concern about teh 1.50 is the web browser...there isnt one. How do I go on the internet? Is the program for it easy to use like the one in the 2.01?

Also what are you guyses opinion on the status of the 2.50 hack? How long do u guys give the hacking process to finish? 1 week? month? 1 year? never?

EDIT: another question just popped into my head. What is the goal of the 2.50 hack. Are they trying to run homebrew on the 2.50 or are they trying to find a way to downgrade from 2.50 to 1.50?
I am seriously thinking about returning the 1.50...i really like the web browser and the different themes on the 2.01. I also have a feeling that the 2.50 hack will be done soon.
 
Why upgrade to 2.01 when you can use the web browser and wallpaper features on 2.00? You can downgrade from 2.00 to 1.50 too if you wish to use more homebrew applications.

I have two PSPs...one with 1.50 and one with 2.01. I am trying to decide which one to keep.

Keep the one at 1.5, keep the other updated to the latest FW is what I'd do.
 
2.01 was just to fix the security flaw, much like 1.51/1.52. Anyways, never upgrade your psp above 2.0 as of now. There's an Eboot loader for f/w 2.0 that is able to have a good amount of emulators on it. This way you dont need to keep flashing to 1.5 then 2.0 when you want web browsing. Just browse http://pspupdates.qj.net/ for a few days and you'll pretty much learn all you need. Also I suggest visiting http://www.psp-oss.com/public/ and trying their os shell out (useless atm but is awesome). Enjoy it, and I suggest trying Wipeout and either of the 2 NFS games.

And to answer your question, you can backup your umd games on the v1.5 psp using fastloader or umdemulator 0.8c. By putting your game on the memory stick it'll increase battery life and give better load times. Any higher than 1.5 and you wont be able to.
 
first off id like to thank everyone for their input. I really appreciate the different websites that have been posted.

I am now off to look for another 1.50 FW with no dead pixels to exchange mine with and to return my 2.01.

lol just use your computer and hit the site emulator-zone.com and run psp, psp2, atari, commodore, amiga, sega, sega genesis, xbox, n64 heck I could go on forever personally I can tell you I have dvds full of every dam console game made other than all the xbox and ps2 but got alot of those also. And simple fact is if you got a fast computer and use aa/af etc the games look alot dam better than they ever did with the original console.
 
I GOT AN UPDATE GUYS...

so I returned my 2.01 psp and kept the 1.50. After playing the videos on the demo disk I have come to the conclusion that the older psp have different screens from the newer ones. I noticed a lot more ghosting and choppiness. I also noticed that the screen isnt as bright nor is it as sharp. I have heard that the Japan PSPs have different screens but I have not heard of the new PSPs having different screens. Is any one aware of this? Is it really the screen or the firmware causing the difference?

nice.....my second cousin just called me and asked if $100 was a good deal for a PSP and i told her the retail for around $200, i just saw the 2.6 update on there site and you can watch tv?someones psp is going to be stolen in my family
 
yah too watch tv on ur psp u need this expensive hardware & software. I just took back my psp too Circuit City, i gave it a 5 day test run and wasn't satisfied so I got my money back. Too me its not worth 265 bucks after tax when you have to spend another 50-80 on a memory stick and the games being 40-50. EBGames wouldn't gimme my money back on PSP NBA live 06 so I put 80 bucks and the game towards a Nintendo DS and traded in some games to get a copy of mario kart ds. Now thats the way too go :D
 
would best buy take back a PSP if theres a scratch on the screen? the damn system keeps turning on and off randomly and i'm going to take it back to them tomorrow but theres a scratch on the screen. I got it last week...

Games expensive if you buy them at retail, I have gotten Tokobot 30 bucks at retail (Target) great game, Populopus 30 bucks retail, Metal Gear Acid 24 bucks shipped (ebay) and Lumines for 23 bucks shipped Ebay also. So it depends where you get your games from, I will never see myself spending more then 30 bucks on any games PC, nor PSP. I always get them on Ebay or I shop around. I myself dont see myself playing a DS, its looks like a kids toy, in my opinion. NO hard feelings on DS fans.

Yeah the games are quite expensive at around $50 but the PSP has so much more to offer than just gaming....it is an all around portable media player. If you are looking for something purely for gaming then the DS would be the way to go.

Completely agreed with that statement. Though the PSP isn't the best mp3 player, it is a fantastic all-round (jack of all trades master of none) device that has a few good games here and there. If you're looking purely for gaming, you go the other way. If you want a media device, the PSP is the way to go. Unfortunately for the PSP, dev costs are almost the same as PS2, so you'll see a bunch of ports and similar prices to games on its bigger brother. What I don't like about the PSP is the damn cat+mouse game you have to play with Sony to be able to run homebrew code and still play the latest games.

It's not hard if you know where to look. There are firmware-loaders now that allow you to fake higher firmware so that you can play recent games.
