I cant belive alienware

Hmm alienware does not want its customers to do any research or component selection on the systems it builds for them?

They're just trying to drum up business I'm sure. Besides, most people on the [H]ardForum are do it yourself kind of people; it's really our hobby, just like model railroading is a hobby. No serious model railroader is going to purchase a pre-made train system, and no serious computer hobbyist is going to purchase an Alienware.

Besides, with $2000-$3000 I can build a computer better than Alienware, or I can save money and build only as much computer as I need.

give me a fucking break:
http://www.alienware.com/build_vs_buy_pages/style.aspx

I'll take my Lian Li over that ricer piece of shit plastic thing anyday

I agree that if you want a easy, hassel free experience, building it yourself is not a good decision, expecially if you're a dumbass like a lot of people

but I enjoy messing with the hardware and seeing how everything works

I am so glad I built my first system 1 year ago this month and I was one click away from buying an alienware at one point

Exactly, this is just a marketing tactic. It’s designed to make the people who question if they can build it themselves realize they need a lighter wallet due to alienware. Its just spin, ignore it! :)

ROFLMAO I thought that was quite humorous.

That was blatant lies + SCO quality FUD to discourage those who are thinking of making the leap from overpriced systems to do-it-yourself. The only point in their little document that I felt was truly valid was the warranty issue. I imagine that will scare off any first timer who is hestitant about doing it themselves. What a shame.

BWAAAAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

If I was drinking something, then I'd gladly spew it all over my monitor and keyboard for that laugh.

very humorus to anyone who even knows a little bit about computers...

but one point that they didnt really stress, and was prolly their biggest thing to bash on, was research
meh, their loss :p

That has to be the funniest ad I've seen to date next to Microsoft's advertised uptimes.
Research, WHAT RESEARCH?!?!?! Anyone who is building a computer will most likely already have a good idea of what they want to get and will start there. I mean come on, it's not like choosing a motherboard takes days after all.

Integration? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? You're not replacing the control center of an airport, you're building a freaking PC for *Deity of choice*'s sake! What you don't have to connect your Alienware up to a monitor or power or the keyboard and mouse? DUDE!!! A totally wireless PC!

Updates? Yeah, your plastic *Look at me, I'm a Barbie accessory reject!* PC needs them too. NEXT!

Troubleshoot? *blinks* OH!!! That's that thing that people who own their PCs call it when they have to stay on the phone with Alienware's tech support for 2 hours while the "tech" (holding back bile while calling them this) reads off a flowchart.

Alienware claim of first-to-market is also a valid one, even if the claim is won by a slim margin.

I don't see what the drama is about. Is this the attitude of today's computer enthusiasts? There are more of you out there than ever, yet it's ironic to see the sense of elitism rising even among the noobs here. This is just marketing--nothing to see here, move along.

yea, i think ill join that club also...

if you dont like alienware, dont buy one...you guys are gripping because alienware is showing the ease of buying one of their systems vs building your own. it could be worse, what if compaq or gateway were doing something like this. at least alienware offers pretty high-end computers.

I find all those "extra" steps almost more fun that actually using the finished PC.

lol, me too

but I realize some people don't, they just want to get the system and start using it and for them Alienware is a good choice, it makes getting a gaming PC almost as simple as going down to Wal-Mart and picking up a PS2 or XBOX

plus Alienware does make very high quality machines and from what I've seen, their customer service is excellent

I would think Research/Product Selection would go together.
And Building/Interegation/Updates/Troubleshot would also be together.

So Alienware would be 5 steps ( no research buy crap they get good deals on)
and Custom would be 6 steps (just research so you can buy good parts you like)

Lol and they should add Wait 2 months or so for things to become available to them (Like there PCI Express 6800 which had a wait of 2 months or there P4 3.8 LoL)

well, i havent built a computer yet, but i am planning to for christmass. the first reason that i decided to build was mainly because i hear its cheaper :) .. i think i made the right choice because big name computer manufacturers (hp, dell, gateway,...) don't give u enough choices :( and i like to know EXACTLY what i am getting. :)

...i am looking forward to the actual build :D

and i must say, alienware is right about the reason why buying a computer is better then building one. they say that it is easier, and i dont care how experienced u are, it is. it may not be hard for some of u to build a computer and may even think it is fun, but the bottom line is that it is easier to buy from alienware then to build.

u may think building is better(as i do) but, it really isnt easier or as simple

lol, I remember when I was younger and dumber and reading thru magazines and seeing the Alienware ads, I used to think Alienware was the shit.

lol, Now I take apart and put my computers back together just for fun.

Wow, that is soo lame. So according to that link, you *MIGHT* end up with a shitty looking case if you build it yourself, like it's an accident or something. Like you MIGHT catch the flu. How lame.

And of course they picked a plain ol' ugly grey case that has not two, not four, but three 5.25" bays.

 And what's wrong with three bays vs. two or four?

I guess they feel threatened. As enthusiasts, we must really be growing in number and knowledge.

ROFL GG!!!

Regardless of their marketing tactics, I do know that they are good people with their services. What you are *really* paying for is for their qualified services (qualified by my standards anyway-- and my standards are high). And please, Mage, don't bring falsified accusations against Alienware with their tech support. They don't hold you for 2 hours and read off a flowchart. They're actually knowledgable and helpful. The *latest* I've ever waited for an Alienware tech would be around 13 minutes. But that was only when I had some deep problems back then.

Me too. I'd love to build another computer. My friend is looking to get one for christmas, and I told him to give me a budget and I'll build it for him.

This article they wrote is rather insulting to people.

Anyone notice the section with the reputable dealers? They have screenshots of websites that are the MOST reputable, newegg.com, tiger direct, etc.
Funny stuff.

i think a lot of people are seriously afraid of compatability issues.. and that's why they get them prebuilt.. plus they don't want to spend the time installing an OS..

they said that upgrading a custom built system would be harder than upgrading an alienware?
restoring the system to its original setting could possibly be impossible?

and yeah you could end up with a plain boring system.. but only if you buy a cheap ass case..

i don't care.. let people buy alienwares.. cause then they can hassle alienware tech support when they get spyware on their computer instead of me...

i wouldn't call tigerdirect the MOST reputable... i might not even call them reputable at all...

LMFAO !!!!!!!!!!!!! omg.. thats almost like saying a honda civic with a folgers coffee can and a 747 wing on it is better than a muscle car of any sort

No matter how much effort you put into perfecting the interior configurations of your self-built system, you could very well end up with a generic and bland off-the-shelf case that poorly reflects all your hard work. This results in you being stuck with a dull-looking system that lacks any sense of style and fails to catch anyone’s eye.
Oh NOES!!! I don't get a case that looks like complete shit...well fuck me, that must mean...oh wait...it means NOTHING.

Yah I aggree with you, I can't wait to build a computer. I'm actually looking forward to having more fun building it than using it...
Oh yah, and I think alienware forgot a step on their part. They should have included "shipping" too.

ROFL, That link is hilarious!

Many of thier slides are totally bogus, the few I found the most funny are:

-Research- Anyone with the slightest bit of intelligence does at least some research before they plan to build or buy computer.

- Generic Gray box-: That was the case (no pun intended) 3-6+ years ago. Most of the cases today are premodded and/or don't look that bad. It's actually harder to find a Generic Gray box than it is to find a decent, stylish/premodded case.

- Shipping charges/Retail Expenses: most of the parts people buy from online retailers (like Newegg and ZZF) either have free or low shipping cost, and most of the time are cheaper even with the shipping cost than if you bought it at a retail store. They also fail to mentioned that you will be majorly ripped off if you buy from them :).

-Forums- I am sure that our "public forums" (like [H]) are be better than their's will ever be.

The only thing that they may be better at is organizing wires, but I'm sure I could do that If I really wanted to, and it really isn't worth paying the 1.5x-3x extra cost.

They also forget to mention that the assembly is the fun part!
