How much RAM do I really need?

Right now my computer has 2 256 meg sticks of PC3200 RAM... Corsair value select or something like that. I looked right now at my physical memory in Windows XP (SP 2) and saw that with running what I usually do.... AIM, Firefox, Winamp, Bittorrent, Outlook, Norton, etc. that there is only 80 megs available. I also notice that it takes awhile for my computer to do actions sometimes. Longer than I would think it should on a P4 2.4c anyway. My question is, should I go ahead and purchase two more sticks of RAM? Or is it not worth it? Keep in mind all I would probably do is buy more cheap RAM. If I should get it.. what is some good cheap stuff to get... preferrably at newegg and keep in mind I don't overclock or anything like that.
 
from what i can tell about xp... you need a lot of ram... my system is half as fast as it was with 2000 :( but then all the processes are being run that want to run.. not like 2000 where i turned a lot off...if the end... the amount of ram you want probably depends of what you want to do with it... :-| i just looked at my task manager... 4/5 of my stick is being used and i only have one browser window open, Yahoo im, firewall and antivirus... i had better get another stick in here soon....

i have half the ram you have at 2700 and my system hasn't locked up yet... i bet you're fine..

i've run limewire and ripped dvds at the same time on top of the internet stufff... runs fine for me... :-| haven't tried any games on xp yet...
 
Put 1Gb of ram in your system - thats really the sweet spot for cost/performance. As long as the specs of the ram you buy match what you have already you should be good. Newegg is a good place to shop :)
 
a gb is good, i run a gb in my box, and it works well, now i just need to upgrade my 3 year old p4 2.0ghz 400mhz fsb :(
 
add another 512...make sure to match the brand and model if possible.

Lately, 1 GB seems to be the norm with 512 being the minimum.

If you don't need it right this second, you'll probably need it in the near future. Cheap RAM is good too. Corsair Value Select is a good choice as it runs at CAS 2.5, some cheap ram will only do CAS 3 which is a bigger slow down then 2 to 2.5.
 
If your system seems a little sluggish because of lack of RAM, then get 512 more for that sweetspot of 1 gigabyte.

Nothing wrong with cheap RAM as long as you buy the good stuff.

Corsair Value Select or Crucial. You really can't lose.
 
Rule of thumb when it comes to memory: Buy as much as you can afford.

It has been this way since the dawn of personal computing, and won't be changing anytime soon.

(yeah, this is coming from a guy with half a gig - Perhaps the key word here is 'afford.')
