im having some problems with a via chipset on a 7kvmp board. It usually crashes my comp when i play any games using the Quake engine. so games like jedi acadamy, quake3, wolfinstien and so forth crash like three minutes into gameplay. Now at first, i found out i had something to do with my damn soundcard by creative labs, so i bought a cheap maddog soundcard for it, now it worked fine for the longest time. now its doing it again. The error is simple, My computer would run fine, then about two to three mins into the game i my screen turns black, comp locks up, and my speakers make a loud, very fast vibrating noise. anyone else have this problem, i have downloaded the latest drivers for both the maddog card and the 41 via chipset. but im still getting the problem. anyone else having this problem or does anyone have any imput?

is the sound card sharing an IRQ? you may want to reserve IRQ 5 for the soundcard.

I have an Abit KV8 Pro board and it will not take my SB live ot save my life. it does exactly what you speak of, screen goes black, then the computer locks up. Using onboard audio it works flawlessly.

So intensive tasks kill your computer..

How's you temps, memory and PSU running...

Here's a little temperature checklist to go over:
Check the following for overheating or perceived overheating:

- Is the heatsink correctly installed ?
--> Verify it is correctly installed.

- Is the heatsink filled with dust and crud ?
--> Clean with compressed air in a can.

- Is the heatsink fan operating ?
--> Replace defective fan with similar or better unit.

- Is the heatsink adequate for that application/CPU ?
--> Verify it meet the requirements for the CPU being used.
--> RETAIL heatsink? May require lapping and better TIM.

- Is thermal interface material used between heatsink and cpu ?
--> Verify it is used, and is applied according to the manufacturers guidelines.

- Is the TIM pad cover removed from heatsink before installation, if using supplied TIM pad ?
--> Remove the cover before installation, failure to do so will insulate the cpu from the heatsink.

- Is there adequate airflow or case ventialation ?
--> Verify airflow, add case fans if required.

- Is the Vcore set higher than specified by the manufacturer ?
--> Verify the Vcore is set to the manufacturers specification in the mainboards bios.

- Is the temperature read via the internal temperature diode. Is the tremperature read via the socket thermistor ?
--> Temperatures read at the diode can and will be higher than an external reading.

- Is the temperature sensor properly calibrated ?
--> Several board have this problem, check manufacturers bios revision history for calibration fix.

- Outside temperature high ?
--> If the external temperature is high, then the case fans will be drawing in hot air, especially during summer months.

Download and run memtest86 and see if your memory is shite...

Run a mainboard monitor and see if power supply is dieing...

cpu and case run cool as can be cpu about 84degrees fer and case about 80 or so, i think it has to do with the chipset, might just replace the "DAMN" board.

Nvidia and Creative products fight to hog the bus on certain chipsets (VIA)
basically two big guys are trying to fit in a telephone booth

onboard audio works is a dead giveaway
