I just put together my new gaming rig and I got a free copy of HL2 to download. So I download it and went to go and play and steam said it would 310 mins until a game was available. Would someone please explain t.his and put it in the noob perspective. I know there is a better way.

are you on a modem dial-up internet connection? anyway, when you first install HL2 it has to download and install additional content for the game. This could take a while. On my DSL connection it took about 20 to 30 minutes. If you don't want to wait for it than start it right before going to bed and let it download overnight.

Yeah, best way to tell how much is downloaded, right click on the game in your games list, go to status, and it will show you how much of it is downloaded. And depending on how busy thier servers are you might get it fast or slow. Just let it sit for a while and it will get it all.

Bad timing!! It Sounds like you might have tried to DL HL2, coinciding with a STEAM Update. Servers are probably just busy. I recently did a reformat and it didn't take long at all to reinstall everything via STEAM.

Well I have dsl and I thought I had downloaded everything because it installed the three games that come w/the bronze package. Another question I have is. Can I play the game offline or is this just a online game?

You can play them in offline mode too.

Also, they just don't download...they have to decrypt also.

Damn it's been awhile since i've played pc games. They have really changed. Change is good though. So i guess i would have to finish downloading the game fully before i would be able to partake in the offline version? Also do you guys have a special mouse or joystick that you you for this game? I'm used to console games w/ a joystick and all. Is there a link with the keyboard functions?

Your best bet is to use the mouse for turning and looking about, and the keyboard for movement, opening doors, etc. It takes some getting used to, but is truly the best way to play first-person perspective games like Half-Life 2.

You'll be fine after the first hour of playing Half-Life 2. They keys are really easy to get used to and you can always map them to your preference if you have the inclination

Be glad you have DSL to download and decrypt the files.
I had only dial-up when I installed the retail version of HL2 and it was 36 hours before I could play the stinking game offline.
