HIS 9800PRO graphical problem.

Hi all,

In the past few days my HIS 9800PRO has been giving me a graphical error. When my computer posts, everything is displayed correctly with the correct colours (e.g. Windows XP GUI). However, when it finally gets into Windows, I am immediately treated to a crazed discoloration of the three basic colours (RGB) Pic1 Pic2 and Normal . I don't have a screenshot of it because my computer refuses to display the "psycadelic" image when I take a screenshot.. In spite of this terrible discoloration, the effect goes away after a few seconds, and I have no problems playing CS:S or Grand Theft Auto S:A. It's also less than a year old (I bought it in August of last year).

I had this problem before but I resolved it by taking the 9800PRO out and removing the drivers using another card, and then reinserting the 9800. However with it coming back, I'm starting to think that its a hardware issue..... I have also downclocked my card thinking it was heat but there was no difference.

Anyways heres my specs.

AMD Athlon 2500+ Mobile (2.3 GHZ)
Kingston HyperX PC3200 512x2 DDR
ABit NF-7s Motherboard
HIS 9800PRO ICEQ {406.8/ 363.3} (Using the Omega drivers 6.14.10) [I had the newer Cat's before but they did the same so I thought it was the driver revision's problem]
120GB Western Digital 8 MB Cache

I've got a sapphire 9800pro that had similar problems. The 2D windows enviroment worked OK, but any 3D applications had checkerboard artifacts and kaliedascope patterns all over the place.

After researching it, I found it was LOW AMPS from my PSU. Even though it was 450 watts, the amps were so low it wasn't enough to push my 9800pro correctly.

So I put in a new Enermax 475 watt with 30 some amps on the dual +12 volt rail. I've heard you want a min. of 18-20 amps on the 12 volt rail.

You might have to dismantle your PSU from the case to read the specs. If the amps are low, replace it. Amps are more important than watts.
 
Thanks for the reply. This is the second time it has happened and its only when Windows is logging into my user account. Nevertheless I'll try that and see what happens =)

edit: the problem still exists when I log in. (I changed the leads).
