High temp with i7 OC

So I overclocked my rig to 3.5ghz, and with a Dark Knight hsf and artic silver I am getting 83C temp at full load:confused:

So I am assuming I did something wrong because I was looking and saw that people with stock hsf were getting 80C at full load OC'ing.

Any suggestions to help with this?

A 3C difference over what other people tend to be getting isn't anything to worry about, especially considering there are numerous possible reasons for that difference. You're still well within reasonable temperature limits, so it isn't really a problem.

Just some general things to look at to improve your temps:
How is your case airflow? Add fans or remove obstructions to get better airflow.
Are your ambient temps high? Obviously your ambient temps have a big effect on the actual temperatures your CPU will run at.
Did you apply thermal paste properly? Since you have an HDT cooler, you should be using this method.

The 3C difference wouldnt bother me, but they are using the stock hsf...
 
So last night I ran prime95 and woke up to my computer turned off. So now I clocked it back to 3.2 where it will likely stay...
 
Possible reasons for your high temps:

1. Too much thermal paste used
2. Maybe you got some air bubbles between your CPU and HS (less likely)
3. Can you reach a stable overclock at a lower Vcore?
4. Hard drives I've noticed can really heat up your ambient temps... you should stick a fan to them and get some good airflow

Do you have a C0/C1 or D0 stepping i7? I can get at least 3.2Ghz on my 920 D0 without changing the Vcore of 1.12v.
 
well I took off the current thermal paster and reapplied it agian, and turned the hsf 90 degrees, and after running prime95 for 10 min the temp is at 70C:D
 
I refitted my heatsink today, with the line method as recommended by Arctic. I even refitted the backplate, which wasn't square on before. I noticed the old thermal compound spread far more in one direction than the other so I assumed that's why I was getting load temps in the high 80s. Imagine my excitment as I booted into Windows after fitting it all much better!

My temps are the same. *gives up*
 
It took me 7 different tries with that cooler to get my load temps down into the mid 70º's. Huge pain, but I'm glad to have figured it out.

At least now I'm confident that the backplate is attached correctly so reseating it shouldn't involve removing the motherboard from the case (tis a bit fiddly to get the fans off with the heatsink attached but certainly possible).
