High gpu core temp?

I have an Evga Nvidia 6800 128mb agp card.
When I first start up the pc the gpu core temp starts at 79c and the ambient temp is 42c or so. It'll work fine with windows and some games but whenever I try to play world of warcraft I get green lines all over and my system resets. I managed to shrink the game before it reset and noticed the temp rose upto atleast 110c.. This was after only 10 minutes at the very most of gameplay.. Any ideas on what to do? I have my pc case open now with a fan blowing on high into right now. All I have open is aim, and internet explorer and the temp has dropped from 79c to 67c in the past 5 minutes and it is still slowly dropping.
 
Have you had the card for a while? My first guess would be that the cooler is clogged with dust. If it's a new card I'd say the heatsink is either not making good contact with the gpu or they didn't apply the TIM correctly. The only other thing that comes to mind is really poor case ventilation.
 
Check heatsink contact, as a 6800 is better than a couple of years old, and the TIM needs to be replaced every so often, as the grey paste dries out after a while. Also make sure the fan is dusty (as mentioned above) and make sure the fan is operating at capacity. If the motor is going out, it may turn, but it would be ineffective at cooling the temps a GPU can generate.

Worse comes to worse, remove the stock cooler, and slap on an Artic Cooler and be done with it. Ther are also passive coolers for that card that are very effective.
 
A card hitting 79c at load is worrysome enough, let alone at idle! DO NOT let your card consistantly run @ those high load temps! Definitely check and replace the thermal paste, and make sure the heatsink is attatched correctly. Too much time at temps like that (100c+) cannot be good for the card!

I'm rmaing the card. I shouldn't have to buy another cooler for a card that cost me $300 when it came out, they should have put something on it that works. The thing has no dust in it. Thanks for the help but they approved the rma so I guess I'll take my chance with a replacement.

I know he doesnt have this card, but for the 7950, its about the norm......For a 6800, it should hit mid 50'sC max......My vanilla 6800 years back got to 52C max. I got worried if it got any hotter than that. RMA is the best choice IMO. Better that than frying a card for no reason. Keep us posted
 
Bleh I hate evga. This is the 2nd time in 6 months I've had to rma a card from them. I offered to put a cc on file to have it crossed shipped but the guy says no and claims they never cross ship no matter what. I know he's a liar since I know quite a few they've cross shipped for as long as they had a cc number. BBB here I come.
