Something completely different from Tango Gameworks, Hi-Fi RUSH is a rhythm-based cel-shaded action game where you move and attack to the beat of the music. It basically takes the concept of Metal: Hellsinger a few steps further. Looks rather interesting. The game is available now on Steam and Epic Game Store, and is included with Game Pass.

Freebie Gamepass game that came out of nowhere. Has a Sunset Overdrive vibe, it's a lot of fun. I don't think I'd pay $30, this is more of a $5-$10 game.

PC Gamepass is definitely worth the money.

It has proven to be a very, very popular title with Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam! Tango makes some wacky stuff with heavy variation between genres but they do a good job with it overall (ie The Evil Within series was a fantastic take if you liked Resident Evil 4/5/6 style play). Hi-Fi Rush is proving to be a success overall. The only question is about the length of the game and replay potential , but talk of patches, expansion content and - if the game is designed in a way that will allow it to work - perhaps even user-supplied soundtracks affecting the world would be neat.

Looking at it from a full priced title viewpoint its discount to a $30 (or $40 if you want the extra costumes and the like) seems reasonable provided it is content heavy enough. However, as a rhythm title even one made by a major studio and obviously well done, some will compare it to more indies in the $10-20 sphere. Those who have Gamepass on PC should get a great deal having it included, but until MS allows Gamepass to sync up and work through Steam, I' m not interested in supporting yet another launcher especially one depending on locked down Windows Store App style usage. Still the game itself seems really worthwhile if you enjoy the combination of Bayonetta/Devil May Cry/ and similar character action alongside rhythm game fun!

This game is SO well done. I had a blast playing it. It's free on Xbox Game Pass so check it out.

It’s kind of sad we’re so easily impressed by a mostly bug-free, smooth running Unreal Engine PC release in 2023.

The game is good but it’s the execution that’s the shining star here. I really hope this is a good sign on Bethesda titles moving forward. I say that, but I know Starfield is basically still using the same old dated crappy Fallout engine.

Wow, what a breath of fresh air this is, and it came out of nowhere.

And holy shit it's all Unreal game that doesn't hitch and stutter like crazy at launch.

The use of DLSS is really good in this game too. On my 2080Ti @ 4k/144Hz with DLSS Quality and VRR I’m able to play it with all the features maxed out. I have t checked my framerate but it’s a smooth experience and it’s still very sharp.

I'm so excited to try out Hi-Fi RUSH! I'm a huge fan of rhythm-based games, and the cel-shading art style really stands out to me. I love the idea of taking the concept of Metal: Hellsinger and taking it a few steps further. I'm definitely going to have to check this game out!

My man! I came here hoping to see a HI-FI rush thread.

Yeah so this game is awesome

And at $30 it's a no brainer

I assume because people are upset the studio was axed by Microsoft... after they had said it was a hit, no less.

Xbox Gives Incoherent Explanation For ‘Hi-Fi Rush’ Studio Closure

Paul Tassi of Forbes parsing the answer by Xbox president Sarah Bond

Sarah Bond looked incredibly uncomfortable giving this answer, understandably, and I am going to try to extract some semblance of from this:
  • “The…situation and what success is for each game and studio is really unique.” – This seems to imply that Microsoft views Hi-Fi Rush as a failure on some sort of unexplained level, despite claiming it was an unqualified success after its stealth launch and widespread positive reception.
  • “We look at each studio, each game team and we look at a full variety of factors when we’re faced with making decisions and tradeoffs like that.” – This goes into the idea that Microsoft is refocusing on its larger IPs and there will likely be less room for smaller games, even acclaimed ones from talented teams, and they cut Tango because they were years away from a new game still. Those are behind the scenes reports, but could be what Bond is alluding to here. Calling the shutdown a “tradeoff” is still absurd though, what are getting in this trade, exactly?

Wow 23,000 overwhelmingly positive review and still got axed, holy shit. The suit and ties are clueless to what gamers want and just want more brainless monetization in games. It's disturbingly sad.

Confusing decision, confusing messaging

Xbox hired former Sony executive Mena Sato Kato to lead Japanese partnership operations not even a year ago, then proceed to close down its only Japanese studio, at a time where Xbox cannot afford to shun the Asian market if it wants to achieve its Game Pass subscriber goals.

Hi-Fi Rush has earned more nominations and the same amount of awards as Xbox’s four other games combined. This includes the more prestigious and/or publicized awards from BAFTA and The Game Awards.

Hi-Fi Rush is Xbox’s highest-rated game of 2023, it is currently the highest-rated Steam game of all time for both Xbox and Bethesda, only matched by Dishonored made in 2012. It is in the top 50 highest-scored game of the year. No other Xbox and Bethesda game even remotely comes close.

Microsoft returned $8.4 billion to shareholders in the form of share repurchases and dividends in its most recently completed quarter. Because why would you want to invest in things or keep successful and productive studios around when you can essentially burn that money to goose the share price a bit?

leadership screwed up and grew the operation beyond leadership's ability to lead, and now it's time for someone to pay for that mistake because you simply cannot abide waste in any form when you're barely scraping by on $20 billion in quarterly profit. Also, the someones who will pay for it had nothing to do with those mistakes, and possibly even delivered games the company "couldn't be happier with.

why Kill the goose that lays the golden eggs ?

Maybe they’ll feed the remaining geese they do have and hope they’ll lay more eggs faster, even though that isn’t how eggs work. The geese had to die, they couldn’t be sold to their neighbours or allowed to run free, because then other people could get golden eggs too and they wouldn’t be as valuable. It’s Xbox’s eggs or nobody’s eggs, never mind that the geese have to die.

Xbox executives just cannot give a straight answer to questions about Tango Gameworks

Tango Gameworks has become the particular focal point of these studio closures, in as much as it is the decision that the Xbox suits keep getting asked about. And the problem is that so far they've done little more than open mouth and insert foot.

It's all so vague, even verging on avoidance, that you're wondering why there isn't a straight answer. If the rationale was as cold and ruthless as "Tango's games don't sell in the quantities we expect for a first party studio" then Microsoft would rightly come in for some criticism, but would also lay the matter to rest. Instead what Microsoft is doing now, as exemplified by today's developments, is implying some highly questionable stuff through a surfeit of word salad

President of Xbox Sarah Bond was asked about the closure in May, and spent about a minute saying absolutely nothing.

Then CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer waffled on about "doing the right thing for the individuals on the team", how "it's not about my PR, it's not about Xbox PR, it's about those teams," and how "I have to make hard decisions that frankly are not decisions I love, but decisions that somebody needs to go make."

Speaking to Variety's Strictly Business podcast (and first spotted by Eurogamer), Xbox executive Matt Booty was asked about Tango's closure, and specifically whether Microsoft had looked into finding a buyer rather than shuttering it.

"There are a lot of things that go into success for a game. You know, what leadership do you have? What creative leadership do you have? Is the team the same team that shipped something successful previously?

"And we have to look at all of those things together and then ask ourselves, are we set up for success going forward? And while there may have been factors and situations that previously led to success, they may not all still be in place as you look at what you're doing going forward."

What Booty is saying here seems an unmistakable reference to the departure of Tango founder Shinji Mikami in early 2023, and puts the Xbox executive on some fairly questionable ground.

What is especially galling about Booty's remarks is that Mikami, one of the greatest directors in gaming history, had set up Tango specifically in order to train new creators and guide their projects as producer.
Mikami of course directed the studio's first game, The Evil Within, but after that served as executive producer on the sequel (directed by John Johanas), on Ghostwire Tokyo (Kenji Kimura), and Hi-Fi Rush (Johanas again).

In other words Mikami hasn't been the creative lead at Tango since 2014, and they've put out three games since then.

So Booty's comments about leadership and shipping something successfully in this context seem, at the very least, ill-judged and disrespectful. If nothing else it's a good example of how being nonspecific about this decision has harmed Microsoft more than just coming out with a straightforward rationale for why it happened.

While I'm glad that Tango is back, I am very skeptical of a company like Krafton spending money on something like this and then just leaving Tango to operate as they wished making single player games with expansion packs. A Korean gaming company that operates a lot of subsidiaries, many of which provide live service (notably PUBG), F2P, MMO, mobile and similar titles doesn't necessarily bode well. While there are a handful of studios Krafton has acquired that make single player games, notably Callisto Protocol's developers Striking Distance Studios (the game was originally set to be in the PUBG universe apparently but that didn't turn out) and Unknown Worlds Entertainment ; formerly known for the Subnautica and Natural Selection series, and now for Moonbreaker which has made under Krafton's publishing a "digital miniatures/tabletop experience".

I can hope that Tango is allowed to just operate independently and do what they used to, ideally an expansion pack or giving a new sequel to Hi Fi Rush etc, but I am concerned that instead that Tango's name, goodwill, and IP will be mined for collab events and spinoffs to be used in Krafton's live service properties. Time will tell, I suppose.
