Alright, first off, I'm a total Mac noob, and fairly noobish when it comes to Hard Drive partitions and the like.

But, now to my problem...
I got my Macbook Pro the other day, and it has a 80GB harddrive.
I was expecting to only be able to utilize from 60 to 70GB of that capacity, though, for reasons that everyone already knows.

HOWEVER, my Hard Drive only has 48GB of free space. WTF?

Now, I'm fairly certain this isn't normal... so.. does anyone have any idea to fix this so I can get my space back?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Solved.

i would say, take it to the apple store and ask them to fix it. And while thier doing that for free just play around with the other stuff.

Mine dropped from 80 to like 42 overnight it seems.
All I have saved is music.
I'm going to the Apple store tomorrow so I'll ask them about that while they're fixing my camera.

You might be able to use the Bootcamp nondestructive repartitioner to remove the unnecessary partition. Because I'm fairly sure it is unnecessary. I've never seen it before. And what the hell does "Microsoft Basic Data" mean?

What happens when you mount it?

Yeah, I figured it out last night. My genius cousin of mine tried to install XP on it when I got it, and failed somehow, but left the partition like that.
So, like you said, I did the Boot Camp Assistant thing, and wa-la... my space is back. Well, only 8.2 gigs, though.

...does OS X really take up that much space? Jeez. lol

Thanks to everyone that tried to help! :)

With Garageband's loops and such, iDVD's themes, etc etc etc, it uses a hefty amount of space. Remove all of that, and you'll get it down to couple of gigabytes.

exactly. i love the liberal stratigies that some of computer stores employ.

"high, future shop, yes im here to sit in your couch, watch your TV, play your video games, and eat you chips. is that OK?

-"absolutly!"

The language pack itself is like a good 2 gigs worth of space.

Are you serious? I only have a small ibook HD until I get payed and can order my external stuff, how would I go about getting rid of that?
