Help with CPU choice

Right now I have a MSI K8N Neo Plat, and I am trying to figure out what CPU to throw into it. I have read multiple threads about the CPUs I am looking at, and that massive Dual-Core Fix thread, and I am still torn.

I am considering the X2, the FX-57 and the FX-60. The 60 has a high price tag, and so I was looking harder at the X2, but with all the problems with gaming, I am not sure I want to take that risk. Even though I am not a hard-core gamer by any means, the 57 seems like less of a headache.

I like the dual-core CPUs because normaly I am running my FTP plus azureus, plus mozilla, plus RSS program, pluss newsgroup reader, plus winamp, plus burn cd/dvds at the same time, and then throw a game up at the same time. Do you guys really think its worth all the headache to go with an X2 over a 57 for somone in my situation?

FX 57 and 60 is an overkill IMO. You can get an X2 with a good set of 2gig ram and that should be fine. There really isn't a big problem with the X2, once you run the fixes its all smooth sailing from there. The problem really is with games and since you really dont play alot of games it shouldnt affect you. Cheers...

If you have the exact motherboard you say you do, you can't put any of those processors in it. It's a socket 754 board.
 
Correct, I got a MSI K8N Neo Platinum and it's a Socket 754 motherboard. None of your choices will work without requiring a motherboard swap.
 
The board I have is the K8N Neo4 Platinum, a socket 939 board... (left the 4 off in 1st post)

And as far as games go, I do play games sometimes and I dont want any hassles playing them. I could see going for an X2 if I did not play games at all, but the box will play high level games about 20% of the time.
 
I play CSS, UT2004, Earth 2160, a variety of C&C games, X², Halo, F.E.A.R... All of those games run fine on my X2 4400+. A few have to be set to use one processor only, but that's easy and after that they run fine.

Your fears aren't groundless, but it's not as big of a deal as you seem to think it is. :)

How good is windows at using both CPUs? Is it really going to be worth running dual-core just because I run 5 or 6 single-theaded applications at once?

Yes, windows does a pretty decent job of it.
 
I definitely think you'd be better off with dual core if you're running 5 or 6 single threaded apps (not to mention all the background stuff your computer is running).
 
Just get a cheep CPU and OC it some. It's not like you'll even notice the difference for at least a year. Sink the money in video cards, you'll thank yourself. Expensive CPUs are for bragging rights. An Opteron 165 would be perfect.
 
Thank you all again for your help with my problem. I think I am going to get the X2 and just do some air OCing.
