HDD temps too high?

I live in a pretty hot area with no AC. In the past, I just left the side of my PC off... good for temps, but bad for dust. Recently I cleaned everything out, and did some tests to see what temps were doing with the side panel off and on.



I let the PC run for about an hour with 3 eve clients open, figuring that would heat things up sufficiently. Then I put the panel back on and watched what happened. Interestingly, only the HDD temps went up much. However, their temp increase was pretty significant.

The case has pretty good cooling. 3x 120mm vent fans, and a 120mm right on the HDDs to cool them. I can't really get it any better short of drastic measures. ATM it's downright cool compared to what temps will get to be in the middle of the summer. I'm worried these temps will have a significant impact on HDD life. But if I leave the side panel off, everything will get clogged with dust again...

So, should I worry about these HDD temps?
 
You look like you maxed at about 45C on the hottest drive.. those temps are fine. Yeah, they're hotter than I'd expect but you're not overheating.

I'm assuming whatever is running in the 70s is a gpu? I hope..
 
uhh if i'm reading that right, they're only 45-50... that's not even NEAR a temp i'd be worried about.

i've ran hdds at 55C for 3+ years w/o failure :)
 
Thanks for the responses. Embarassing, but I've never payed attention to HDD temp before...

I had the side panel off when I had the cpu heavily overclocked, and during hot summer it would reboot randomly :p
 
Most drives are rated to operate up to 60C. Going past 50C can cause long term problems due to thermal expansion. Looking at some data sheets, WD specifies 0-60C operating temperature range for the Caviar Black. Seagate has the same spec for Barracuda 7200.12.

Some of us folks remember the pre-Seagate acquisition Maxtors and pre-FDB motor WD drives...those were hot drives.
