HDD Solution?

I seem to have encountered a problem with storage space.

I am going to be dual booting XP and Vista, and would like to put them on the best drive for OS's. I also am going to be installing many games (40+GB?) onto a hdd that is also the best for games (or close to it). I also need a HDD for storage and for non-performance-demanding apps (200+GB?), speed is not too much of an issue, but i would like to avoid a snail-like HDD for that.

Currently i have a 74GB raptor which holds my 2 OS's and my games. I also have a 250GB barraccudda, which i use for storage.

I only have 2 drive bays left in my Stacker (currently occupied by the two hdd's mentioned above) so i am trying to keep it down to 2 drives to replace my current ones.

I was considering the 150GB raptor to replace the 74GB raptor, but I don't want to take such a hit in terms of cash. Raid 0 is also an option, but I have read that it is not as performance increasing as some think.

Basically, I want to replace my current 250GB barraccudda, and my 74GB raptor, with larger, better performing drives, if that is possible. I'm also trying to not dump a $bazillion (that's right... One Bazillion Dollars) into this.

So I came to the pros at [H] for some help!

Any help is appreciated.

well, the only option for an upgrade for that raptor would be the newer raptor. For the 250GB HDD, I guess you could see if you can afford a new, 320GB drive with more cache.

Are there any other HDD's with similar performance to a raptor (specifically for OS's and games?)

I'm trying not to dump the ~$200+ into the 150GB raptor.

you might be able to sell your old drives though; so the upgrade could cost you less than you think.

would the 15K be THAT much faster than 10K?

and remember, i'm trying to get ~300GB out of only 2 drives. Unless they make 150GB SCSI drives that arn't $300 a piece, that's out of the question. Ironically, before I considered upgrading (before the wonderous discovery of Vista) I had found GREAT deals on SCSI drives/SCSI controllers here on [H]... wish I had jumped on the deal then...

I had been considering SCSI for quite some time, but was constantly turned off by the outrageous price of SCSI controllers... are there any cheap ones that work?

well, have a look yourself:
database
comparison

honestly, I do not know if it is worth it to upgrade to a new raptor...

Well, I definatly need the extra space, and I don't want to take too much of a hit on performance (I <3 My raptor :p). So that's the only logical upgrade I can see... unless SCSI somehow performs a miracle.
