That said, I'm getting a 4770k very soon after release, unless it doesn't OC at all. These prices won't change that. Currently on 2600k.
 
I'm hoping that this generation will incur a major change. On a 2500K and would like to upgrade to something worthwhile.

Kind of a quick judgement from one data point, donchathink?

We don't even know the Q1000 list prices of the processors. Vendors with early stock tend to charge more, and it's always been that way.

Of course AMD is not competing effectively. AMD's top processor typically lags what model Intel sells for around $200 these last couple of generations. That hasn't changed.

Well, for me, it depends on whether or not this next gen coming is the next "toc" or not. Going to a 3570K from a 2500K wasn't worth it in my mind but like I said, if it's a big enough jump then I might have to try it. And your'e right, if I can sell off some older stuff then I might come out on top. But my father needs a new computer and it looks like that's where my old stuff will be going.
 
I believe it really depends on if Broadwell will get DDR4 or Skylake. DDR4 will require new motherboards.
 
Haswell will be great for laptops, more energy efficient and with faster integrated GPU. For desktops, I don't see the need to upgrade from Sandy/Ivy bridge

I can see SKL being the first mainstream platform to utilize DDR4, since BWL is essentially just a die shrink of HWL. On the enthusiast platform side of things...who knows?

As for the pricing, 8-10% increase for the K series isn't bad, imo. Wasn't that what the release day MSRP increase was for SB -> IB?

Not for the mainstream segment. I'm postulating that we'll see an 8 core Haswell or Broadwell on a future enthusiast platform. Then perhaps the availability of an 8 core for the mainstream when Skylake arrives.

The server versions-- Haswell-EP and Haswell-EN-- will have up to 10 cores maximum. (Only one article says 12, but I do believe it'll be 10 cores max.)

Haswell-E MAY carry over the core count from the servers when this processor is released. DDR4 memory controller may or may not be carried over from the server part. I haven't found any article to confirm that.

We're probably looking at 4 to 10 core versions of Haswell-E. That or we'll see only 8 core max for the consumer version of these server processors.

Intel's biggest competitor is now their older products. Even those that are running 1st gen I7's are really struggling to find a tangible reason to upgrade.

We can't trust these prices but they seem ok to me considering processor costs are are still around the same costs as they were 10 years ago, for low/mid and high end CPU's.

I'd love to see HWL 20% over IB in IPC across all models. Not too much to ask for with an architecture change, IMO. We've seen it numerous times in the past. If the rumors of 10% IPC gain turn out to be true, then IB to HWL is about as significant of a jump from SB to IB.

This is what I'm waiting for. Need to upgrade my laptop, but am hoping that Haswell will make not having a discrete card less of an issue

Yep, I'm with you on that. I got a new laptop back in Feb with an IB sporting the HD4000 and it was a 50% boost in GPU performance over my older AMD HD 5470 equipped laptop. Although the HD 4000 is decent for the games I play on my laptop such as FEAR 1 & 2, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, GTA:SA, and games from those eras, the GPU is still a bit lacking. I knew this going in since I had to shop for a laptop within a certain budget, but I glad to see Intel putting quite a bit of emphasis on advancing the IGP in the significant fashion they have been with each new generation.

The CPU itself is undoubtedly powerful enough for anything I do with this new laptop, so IPC increases aren't overly concerning to me. I'm sure others will disagree while yet others will agree, but for my needs, even the i5-450M in my old laptop was perfectly adequate.

My point is that it's nice to see such tremendous advancements with the IPC with each new release, while having the benefits of the faster brand CPU simultaneously plus reductions in power draw which leads to longer battery life and a cooler running laptop.

I was very tempted to go with an AMD APU for the best IGP choice available, but there are some applications I use that that would have been noticeably slower with the much weaker IPC.

Extracting more performance from existing code, given how much has been done for many generations, isn't a magic switch.

Haswell has a wider execution engine and AVX2, both of which are kind of large points over IB in the long term (or earlier, if applications are compiled to take advantage of those things). More efficient scheduling and other uarch enhancements are showing Haswell with a solid 10-15% IPC gain in early low level benchmarks. I can see how someone with IB may just want to wait for Broadwell or Skylake. But I definitely wouldn't recommend someone buy IB over Haswell if they can wait a couple of months.

Not really fair to compare a 6 core part to a 4 core part, imo. The 980 can and will outperform a SB quad core in many applications and even some games, all else being equal.

Besides, reasons to upgrade are purely subjective. ;)
 
I'm wanting to upgrade to either IB-E or HW-E whenever whichever comes out due to lots more PCIe 3.0 lanes, I just can't see upgrading from a 1155 SB to a 2011 SB-E, few % more IPC and increased instruction support could convince me though
 
I have an i7 920@4.1GHz. I'm definitely upgrading to haswell when that's out in June... Or if the Intel Edge program has another 3770k deal out this summer, I may try and find someone to pick that up for me and then my next upgrade would probably be Skylake or if AMD is comes out with something comparable at that point :p
 
I'll be sticking with my 2500K. It exceeds my processing needs, except when I encode video files, but that isn't extremely common anymore, and the 2500K is good enough when needed.
 
Its i7-920 to Haswell for me. That is unless its determined that Haswell-E is coming later this year.

And as I've said in many threads IDF is coming soon. April 10-11.

If you do any video encoding you'll see a big difference...more then double the speed at same speeds.
 
Video encoding I only do every once in a blue moon, it's the high speeds I'm looking for since my primary gaming is FPS.

But if Haswell will have TIM under the IHS like IB has i wont upgrade, even if it can overclock to 5 GHz. Because i don't want to support Intels stupid decision to put TIM under the IHS instead of solder.
 
Does the choice between the 4670k and the 4770k depend solely on what the user intends to do with the chip, or is frequency of upgrading a factor to consider?

It is dependent on what you do with the CPU. i7 if you have applications that can utilize the HyperThreading, i5 if you don't... or i7 if you speculate that more and more applications and even games that can use HT with a significant performance gain will emerge in the next couple/few years.
 
Gather round boys and girls, old man Decko87 will be replacing his ye-old Q6600 on this here launch. It's been a good old dog, I've fed it plenty of treats, and gave it many a pat on the head over the year. But she just can't play fetch like she used to, going to have to put the old girl down. :(

Yeah, my q6600 is going to be put down at the same time. :)

I am not totally sold on Haswell, though. The 4770K vs. 4770 debate is still open, for me. I don't know if I'll gain enough of an overclock to make the cost worthwhile. Plus, the 'K' versions of the SB/IB have a few processes nerfed. (Sorry, I forget which low-level things they are, or even if I'd notice them!)

Games, some bluray ripping to my home server, and that's about it. (Nothing else even remotely approaching enough of a load to force an upgrade from a 3.2ghz q6600.)

Gotta see what they got when they release them...
