Guild Wars Pre-Order

I will get this and EQ2 because I love MMO's and this isn't one... not nearly close to one. The Mission grounds are limited to a certain number of people... I believe its 16 or so (Think 4 teams of 4?). Even the towns aren't massive, they are limited aswell. They are instanced "zones" that you must jump between to find friends, if you played the alpha during E3 you would know this, remember the drop down that listed over 20 "lobbies", those are the towns, its not massive. Its not like in EQ where you can go to the Nexus and see 100+ people standing around talking, trading or exploring.

This game is nothing more then a 3D diablo clone, sure it has alittle more but not much. I mean the worlds themselves look horrible, They all look like they were built by a random land generator, not hand crafted like WoW, EQ's and EQ2's. The models do look good but its a diablo clone so there wont be that much customization in it.

I'll be happy with it since I loved D2 but its no way a MMORPG or a EQ2/WoW killer....

And I thought I was the only one that saw this.... Needless to say I will get it because it's as close to a free MMO"type" game as it can get.

I've always said Guild Wars was only as massive as it's towns. Everywhere else sans the missions is single player.

You could always play UO, DAOC or RO on free shards. Sure there not the best but it is a Free MMORPG...

I second the question - What is a Free Shard {pertaining to DAoC}?

I spent 5+ years on DAoC and at $13 a month it added up.

Ok, like it mattered, my accounts made me gobs of cash beyond what I put into it, but still - free?

-=M=-

Free Shards are emulated game servers that are run by players, not by the dveloping company. Sometimes they are considered illegal since in the past they used stolen code and reverse enineering but many today are created from scratch. Theres even an EQ based on but its annoying to run and has few people playing.

Just google "Free Shard" or "<Game> Free Shard".

Anyone know what happened to UOX - ultima offline eXperiment? I haven't been able to find much on it.

UO, great game but needed better creature AI. I quit right around the time people were using flour bags to corral and trap creatures.

wtf.....

Guild wars reminded me NOTHIN of diablo except for how the netplay was laid out with the towns/lobbies/missions.

the gameplay is hardly the same.

The graphics are easily some of the best in a mrpg. I don't see where you got random land generation, it looked hand crafted to me....

And UO:X was canned not too long ago.

I'm not sad though, because it was going to be them trying to take a single player ultima game into an online world, nothing like UO.

no mounts
no houses
PVE based

"instanced" missions, etc.

Take a look at this shot, look at the hills and path. Even the texture usage looks to be thrown around and not used artistically... Sure thier might be some hand created zones that are story based but many of the "random" mission zones look like they were generated by a landscape generator, kinda like this one for HL.

Heres another, look at the hills in the background, see how the textures look randomly thrown in, in some parts (Green patches here and there, Rock difference randomly placed). No hand crafted area would have something like that...

Not true anymore, this was changed shortly after E3. All of the "Hunting Grounds" solo areas from E3 are now playable with a team.

are there still areas that are single-player only then?

You can enter *any* combat zone as a solo player - this includes the multiplayer missions. Many regions of the Hunting Grounds are balanced for solo players, while other areas within the same zone are balanced for larger groups. Further, there are now AI-controlled henchmen available who will accompany solo players (and small groups) if desired.

I've been playing around in some of the low-level zones recently. If you played during E34E, do you remember the third mission map where you had to accompany Prince Rurik and rescue prisoners? I was able to solo ~90% of the map playing with a level 6 Elem/Monk character (I should note here that the maps have been re-balanced since E34E and are now intended for groups of 4 players in the level 1-6 range).

Everyone here should take part in the WPE - the game has changed a lot since May, and many of the changes are a direct result of community feedback following E34E.

Great info! Thanks.

I really like what I have been presented with from this game. And the best part about it IMO - is that it will only be the cost of one game before I realize if I like it or not, not like paying 12-15 bux a month on a larger scale only to find out that I do not like it.

I have loved these types of hack and slash {and the hybred genre they are now} since the stand-up Gauntlet days. I can still lose an hour easily into DiabloII and all I see for the future is refinment of this class of game.

And sure, there will be some stinkers on the way - thats what I'm here for, to try 'em all. :)

With a team...with a team. A team does not an MMORPG make.

Neither, does a town or towns for that matter. MMORPG = massively populated in ALL areas.

he didn't try to say it was, just that you could play with other people in the SP only parts now...

I've never said that Guild Wars is an MMORPG. Neither have ArenaNet, for that matter - they call it a CORPG (Competitive Online RPG). The press call it an MMO. Is that my fault, or ArenaNet's fault? No. Anyway, Guild Wars has a lot in common with many MMO's available (in fact, it's more massive than AC2 which I tried for a while ... I see - and play with - more people in Guild Wars on a daily basis than I ever saw/played with in AC2). Guild Wars is more massive in alpha than a lot of the marginal MMO's out there. EQ2 and WoW are obviously going to beat GW hands down in terms of massiveness, but anyone who tries to dismiss GW as a dud game simply because it isn't a true MMO is seriously deluding themselves. You gotta play the game and really experience it. Is it an MMO? No. Does that make it a bad game? No. IMHO GW is a far better game than any of the MMO's I have tried (that includes WoW).

My apologies to people that thought I was coming off as an ass. My response was intended for those people that thing Guild Wars is an MMO game.

I played it. I like it. I will buy it. I'm looking forward to the free previews they have each month starting in October.

I see missions becoming stale after a while though. A lot of the appeal to MMO fans is all the people. It's kind of like a microcosm like that.

I suppose that is what you get considering it's free per month. I would have rather had them charge a minimal fee like 5 bucks per month and have it be truly MMO.
