I hope this is in a decent place ..... If not Im sure a MOD will handle that.

Anyhow ... I am thinking about trying a USB game controller for PC.
I am NOT familiar with any of the console controllers, ie PS3, XBox, etc .. So it will be a learning curve for anything i get. I have just been using the old KB/Mouse for all PC games, but I cant help but wonder if a controller would be a little better, maybe a little edge over the KB and mouse combo on certain games ?

So .... I am considering a budget controller ! Which ones do you guys use ? Any thoughts ! Or should I just stick with KB/Mouse ?

I watch my sons play Arkum City on PS3 and it looks like it would be so much easier with that style controller ? But I have not tried it on PC yet.

As I stated ... Im not use to any controller, so the learning curve will be the same.

My KB is a Steel Series Shift (ZBoard style) and Logitech G700.

I'm not familiar with all of those games but many of them are better with KB/M, the exceptions being the Batman games and LA Noire(I would guess K&L2 as well).

I'm sure many will recommend the 360 controller but personally I can't stand that the left analog stick and d-pad are backwards compared to most controllers. I would recommend getting a controller with same button layout as a 360 controller and that uses x-input since most games are ports designed with the 360 controller in mind. I have the Logitech F710 and it's been great other than the triggers being a little stiffer than I would like, it's not a cheap controller but Logitech does sell some cheaper wired versions if that's a major concern. Another nice thing about the Logitech controllers is that they have a switch that allows you to choose x-input for xbox ports and d-input for older games.
 
Depending on how many controllers you have for PS3, you could just swipe one of those, use the MotionInJoy drivers for xinput, and play games with that.

Otherwise I'd try a 360 controller, if you like that get a wired one.

Most games that support controllers now support xinput as the standard, so if you get a different controller make sure it supports that.

BTW ... The PS3 controllers are wireless. will they work also plugged in on a PC ? I know, Noob for sure HA

X-input is for newer xbox ports. Direct input(d-input) was the standard on PC for years until Microsoft started pushing their "games for windows" certification that required games support the 360 controller first, they can still support d-input as well but most devs don't bother. There are programs that allow you to use other controllers with a x-input game(motionjoy for PS3, x360ce and others for d-input) but I have no idea if you can use a wireless PS3 controller.
 
I say just get a standard wired Xbox 360 controller and be done with it!

BTW, are your system specs for real and up to date? 7800GT? :eek:
 
If you've got PS3 controller lying around, just use that at least for trying out how using a controller feels like compared to KB/mouse.

Use MotionInjoy drivers, the latest versions are very easy to install even on a 64 bit system. You can connect your PS3 controller to your PC either via regular USB cable or via bluetooth (if your PC has BT of course).

After you got everything running (it only takes like 3 minutes), under profiles, choose the "Xbox 360 Controller Emulator" option and then press "enable". That way your PC will recognize the PS3 controller as an Xbox 360 controller, that's great for games that have native support for Xbox 360 controllers like Arkham City or Skyrim, it'll feel just like you're playing the game on a console.

Yep. I also play Batman, GTA4, etc. with a controller.

The xbox controller is the most hassle free way to go. You can either go wired or get the wireless adapter/controller bundle. The vast majority of games work out of the box with xbox controllers on pc now days. You can have multiple wireless controllers linked to one receiver. I play Trine 2 co-op on the tv this way and it's great.

I wish it worked for Mass Effect 3 - would have loved to play that one on the couch.

I'll keep this in mind for my second playthrough once I beat the first one again. Been looking to get some more use out of my TV and controller.

I looked at the Logitech F710 ... It looks good and has some good reviews, just a bit out of my price range at the moment.
 
The PS3 controller works damn well...I used mine via Bluetooth. Like I said, it worked well, it was just a pain to set up.

The Xbox controller however is just damn plug and play! Done, and MOST current PC games support it 100% as in the game will actually say "Hit the A button" instead of "Hit Enter"...ya got me? This is mainly due to most current PC games all being Xbox 360 console ports too! :p

The Logitech is basically just a wireless Xbox 360 controller being sold as a "PC" controller.
 
I've grown fond of the Xbox 360 controller over the last couple years and don't even own a 360!! Very easy to just jump into most newer games and have it already setup. Even cheap generic wired ones should work but stay away from "Power A" controllers as they have bad play in the analogs.

Could keep an eye on newegg as they have had Xbox 360 wireless PC setup two times now for about $35ish shipped in the last few months.

Alternatively if there are extra PS3 controllers then set that up. Or if any extra PS2 controllers around they have adapters on ebay for very cheap around $5.

EDIT: Batman setups flawless with 360 contoller as its Games for Windows. I personally think FPS games should stay KB/M on PC though as its way more accurate.
 
yeah, xbox360 controller. I play with one on alot of single player games. I definitely feel like alot of ported games play alot better with it.
