G5 or MX1000

Umm, if big hands are a problem, and the G7 doesn't fit, the G5 won't either. They're exactly the same size. I have a G7 and personally love it. The only problem deals with the sensitivity changing when I restart my computer, but if I turn the mouse off and back on, it's fixed. I can't express how much this mouse kicks ass.

I love my MX1000 :D But get the one that is most comfortable in your hand!!! That is the most important thing in a mouse.

I have tried the G5, G7 and MX1000 and this is what I have concluded:

G7: tracks great, battery life sucks

G5: just like G7 (tracks great), adjustable weights is a great idea, braided extra long cord is good

MX1000: is a good wireless mouse, really made for bigger hands (at least bigger than mine), battery life is better than the G7-holds a charge longer, the negatives are:you cannot replace the batteries once they no longer hold a charge(avg life is 3 years as per Logitech) you cannot adjust the DPI on the MX1000 like you can on the G5/G7--it is locked at 800 DPI

I'm loving the G5. I prefer a wired mouse. Wireless is kinda cool but it seems like whenever I'd really need to be using my mouse I'd end up having to put it back in the charger.

The mx1000 charges pretty quick if it does run down. I don't see why you can't take a long bathroom break and get it charged back up. Personally, I like the mx1000 better because of all the extra buttons. Sure people use the forward button very little, but I still use it nevertheless. The cruise control button also comes in handy when there are long pages and I feel lazy. As far as tracking goes, the newer batch of mx1000's don't have that delay that everyone was ragging about, but the downside of that is that the battery life suffers a lot compared to the old ones. I used to be able to go about 2 weeks with the older ones, but the newer ones seem a little longer than a week. I know intense gaming (4-6 hours a day) brings the battery life down to around 3 days and 2 days respectively.

If my 1000 died today, I'd replace it with another 1000. I'm not crazy about the looks of the G7, and more importantly, I don't like that it had some buttons taken away.

I am very happy with the purchase of my G5. I'm not into the wireless mouse thing so I opted for the G5 and it is probably the best purchase I have made in a year

I just went from my MX700 to a MX1000... the grip takes a bit to adjust to from the Mx700 *which appears to be very similar, if not exactly the same as the G5/G7...

other than the little adjustment, its a great mouse.

I also worship my mx1000. I NEVER have to charge it while doing things because I simply put it in the cradle whenever I am not at the comp. If yours keeps dying, its your own fault. On a single charge mine lasts days of use. Seriously.

I also love the smoothness, how it fits my hand, and extras.

i went from a 700 to 1000 myself and love the feel of them both, plus the buttons come in handy for browsing and games.

i'm having issues with my mx 1000. it kinda skips pixels. in general computing it's more of just an annoying eye sore, but when i play wow it can cause me to miss pressing a spell box, which is kinda frustrating after a while. anyone have any troubleshooting tips i might be able to try?

If your using the usb port, then again that is probably a manufacturing defect. According to a call to logitech, switching to the PS/2 port should fix the problem, but I didn't not try this. I pushed for them to replace it since they admitted it was a faulty receiver and so they sent a new one out.

The weight system is pretty cool on the G5, but its really an enthusist kind of thing. The mx518 is an awesome mouse and is enough for anything.

ok here it is plain and simple, functionality wins overall, and here is how it breaks down between the two mice:

If you play alot of first person shooters, and must have precise control over mouse speed and weight, the mx518 or the g5 would be the better way to go, but then its not as useful in the other areas where the mx1000 excels greatly. If fps games aren't exactly your thing, and you play a mulititude of other genres and use alot of windows applications as well, the mx1000 is definitely a better choice, and it still handles well even in first person shooters but maybe just not as elegantly as the g5 or the mx518.

Conclusion:
Mx518/g5 - First person shooter fanatics (wins in weight and fine precision)

mx1000 - normal joes who play other games and use windows apps. (wins in style, button functionality, and ergonomics with the hand)

oh yea, and with the laser the mx1000 works on more surfaces, while the optical mice poop out.

Well, I just got my G5 today via FedEx.... I must say, it's a major change from my Microsoft Wireless Elite. But In just the few hours that I've used, it absolutely love it. A friend has the MX1000 and I'd have to say it would probably fit a bigger hand better, but just doesn't have all the sweet features.....

Although I'd never buy hardware from them, Best Buy always has a nice setup to go in and "test fit" the products before you buy them at a reasonable price elsewhere.... I've done that with all of my computer periphrials....

LOL what did Bestbuy murder your parents in a dark alley? I bought my G5 at Bestbuy for $49.99 plus tax which is barely more than what newegg.com has it for now. :) Drove over to bb during lunch, picked up the mouse, took it home. Much better than ordering online and waiting three days to save $4.00

I don't have a wide range of experience, but I prefer the feel of my MX1000 over my roommate's MX518, and as others have noted it's battery life is excellent. I've only hit 1 bar (out of 3) on the charge meter once, and that was this past week when I was home over break, as my charger was in a somewhat inconvenient location. Normally if I place it on the cradle when not in use I don't even see 2 bars very often. Oh, and the extra buttons are nice to have not only for use within Windows, but also to be able to assign many different gaming actions to just my mouse is nice. Oh, and I'd say I have pretty average, if not slightly small, hands for an adult guy, and the mouse is very comfortable to use.

MX1000 definately. More accurate and responsive then you could ever need. The DPI is no biggie, but i love the looks, the feel, and the buttons of the MX1000 over the G series...

MX1000, because you are going to miss your forward buttons....

G5 For adjustable weights and tracking
G7 For wireless. Expect to be swapping the battery pack alot
MX518 for buttons and tracking

I have a G5, considering a MX518 instead.

Is the adjustable wieght system all that useful? I mean is there anyone here who would swear by it?

I thought the G7 and MX1000 had pretty much the same body.
i've got the MX1000 and I love the thing. it feels great in your hand. just took a few days to get used to the weight of it.
I play CS:S and BF2 with it and works great for me. a buddy of mine got a G7 the other day and I may go over there today and try it out.

I first thought it was stupid, or a novelty. But I ended up using it - and trying a few different weight combo's out and now I think it's useful if you game a lot. The one thing I hated about the MX700 was how heavy it was. Other mice i've used were too light - so the ability to change the weight is nice. The one thing I still dont' use is the adjustable speed - I don't see the point in that myself. I guess that would take some time to figure out the best settings for different games and different functions within games. (different weapons and vehicles within BF2 for example)

Yeah see, the G5 and the G7 can adjust to 400, 800, or 2000!...

Actually, on the G5 and G7, ANY dpi can be used... you just have to use the included mouse software to choose whichs dpi levels to use

I am also in the market for a mouse (and keyboard). I'm starting to think the 518 is a good choice for me. I like the two thumb buttons and the looks of it. Switchable between 800 and 1600 dpi, who uses 2000 anyway? Haven't seen any bad reviews having to do with it being optical.
