functional upgrade

my friend and i are arguing over what is the best upgrade in her situation:
in general, what will provide the biggest functional upgrade?

120 GB traditional SATA --> 128GB ssd

or

Intel Core i7 920 (2.66MHz) --> something newer (without replacing the mb)

all thoughts are welcome. thanks!
 
You don't specify either a budget or an application so it's hard to be specific but generally.

A SSD will hugely speed up anything that makes heavy random access to files, stuff like booting, opening applications etc. Often by a huge margin. This results in a huge increase in percived performance of the computer since typically the bursts of heavy random access tend to come between a user trying to do something and it actually getting done.

A faster CPU will speed up CPU bound processing (things like video encoding, file compression, most image processing and maybe gaming depending on whether your gaming is CPU or GPU bottlenecked) but your CPU upgrade options on your existing board are very limited. Going from a 920 to a 950 is only going to be a 10% upgrade at best and the 6-core chips are extremely expensive.
 
list all system specs and what the pc is used for. If for gaming which games?
