Forspoken

Yeah, this is a good delay.

Not only does the game need some fleshing out. They were supposedly going to be the first game to ship with direct storage. And something tells me that isn't ready yet, either.

I also hope they tone down the voiceover...

Forspoken: Exclusive Spells and Combat Gameplay (4K)

Starting to look much better than the earlier videos we've seen. Maybe it will be worth a try, after all. Let's see what it looks like closer to release.

it's an exciting time to be a PC gamer...DirectStorage on PC, DX12 Ultimate, Resizable BAR, more ray-tracing, better DLSS etc

And worse "everything else important" in every PC port!

I mean, just look at the cluster that was Elden Ring's performance (even after a delay) Nearly every recent Squeenix game has had similar issues (that are rarely patched, unless you are a mainline FF MMORPG like 14 that was initially abandoned!)

When shit recent games like Nier and I Am Setsuna, what makes any of you think this will magically correct itself?

New video shows loading times with DirectStorage. This game is supposed to use ray tracing, so it seems odd that they are showcasing old technology like AO and SSR in this tech showcase.

That 1.6 second load time difference isn't exactly selling me on upgrading my SATA SSD!

Why do we need Windows 11, again?

Like most hardware you get diminishing returns.

DirectStorage works on Windows 10. Microsoft just says it works "better" on Windows 11 because it has the latest "optimizations." Microsoft doesn't detail what those optimizations are. Will be interesting to see what difference there is, if any, between running the game on W10 vs. W11.

Initial load into a game isn't necessarily where DirectStorage could be most useful. It should be most useful for streaming in new area data---while playing. Potentially leading to more seamless game worlds and better LOD transitions.

You know how a lot of games over the past 5-ish years have choke points in levels, where the character is forced to slowly squeeze through a tight space or wait for a security door to open or something like that?------that sort of forced "stop" in gameplay, should become a thing of the past.

I don't see those things being eliminated as that would require a fundamental change in development...developers can't eliminate those loading areas when NVMe's make up a small overall percentage of consumer hard drives

And its not just the asset read time - you also need to compile things like shader code for the new area.

Game engine load times are a fraction of total asset access times on the PC

New gameplay. Still has the issue with particle effects covering the screen. Framerate at least looks stabilized on the PS5. Enemies all look to be like "bullet" sponges, taking way too long to take down. The person playing needs to cycle through all their powers on cooldown to make progress, which reveals an issue with too few quickslots for attacks. The need to constantly cycle the active power really slows the gameplay down while the game looks like it should be playing smooth and fast. The slowness of normal encounters looks like it led to the player having a multi-level HP bar.

And why does everything in the UI need to use a different font?

Delayed again to January 24.

Likely a good thing. Game just doesn't look good. I wonder how much of it they are re-designing at this point.

My issue at this point is what we've been shown of the gameplay loop, and it doesn't look at all interesting. Power dumping against large groups of enemies with huge HP pools sounds absolutely boring. And then that is broken up by a whole lot of nothing, it seems. I don't know if they can change that is half a year. They could at least redesign the UI to be cohesive and useful.

Who knows, at the very least they fix how jank it looks. The combat with that weird FOV and bad animation just looks glitchy and garbage.

I have a feeling this extra year is to try and make this game look like a top tier showcase.

I'm looking forward to this game more for the DirectStorage implementation versus the actual game itself

I'm in no way vested in this game releasing at any specific time and don't understand why anyone else would be, there are plenty of other games to play in its stead. They should take all the time they need to make this the best game they possibly can. If it sucks, we ignore it and move on. If it's awesome we all win.

Game just looks bland. And graphically dated, despite being UE5 it looks worse than some UE4 games. Half a year won't change that. They will just polish up bugs and ensure it runs stable. I don't see them doing any major gameplay overhauls or graphical changes in that amount of time.

I really hope the combat system ends up feeling better than it looks because that is the only thing that will end up saving this game. Everything else looks rather meh. Despite having a fairly strong story team, even the plot bits they've shown haven't really been all that interesting.

It's not using UE5, it's running on the Luminous Engine. The same engine that FF15 ran on, which does not give me a huge amount of confidence in how it's going to perform on the PC.

I think I'm going to start telling my boss that all of my pending projects are delayed until 2023 so that I can achieve the lofty expectations people have for my work.

That explains why it is ugly then, and I expect it to run poorly. SE doesn't seem to be good at the whole "make a game run properly on PC" thing. That includes UE4. FF15 was horrific in terms of performance and stability. Ironically it had many PC specific graphic options yet was still horrible.

Jarring. All I can say. The level design is atrocious. Slap a building on the scenery that looks completely out of place there. Lighting seems non existent, everything just looks flat. The ability effects are obnoxious and overbearing. The parkour seems clunky and unrefined.

This will be square enix's biggest flop to date.

the first game with DirectStorage support is this game's biggest selling point on PC

Her voice tone is jarringly mis-directed. **oh I see, its not here voice. But for some reason, they cut that part of the video to sync up with the voice of the main character. WEIRD".

I will say this updated gameplay video looks better than before. There is progress.

However, it's still so generic/average looking that I wouldn't touch it.

I mean WTF is this? Looks like a game from 2000. I can't tell if this is supposed to be snowy rocks or what. But if it is snow, then why are the bushes and trees green? The building seems completely out of place from the scenery and flat like straight from an asset viewer with no lighting model and light sources added. And it has the detail of about Unreal 1 castles.

The hill in the background looks laughable, it's a heightmap with 5 lowpoly seemingly sprite trees. The sky is the windows 95 loading screen. And would you look at that waterline? Or water surface, or is that supposed to be ice? Can't tell that either. And where are the soft shadows?

If I had to guess, the general game world design appears to be slapped together without much thought/human touch put into it. Yes, it looks bad. It looks like a 2000's MMO.

And SE thinks this game is worthy of the increased $70 price tag. Can Sony hurry up and buy SE.

It's not even just the building. Every asset looks out of place, like they had multiple teams for each asset group and one for world creation and none of them even knew the others existed, much yet communicated then they had some random guy throw them all together.
It reminds me of those old school PC RPGs where the character were (for the time) highly detailed 3D models but the worlds were a weird mix of 2D and 3D assets and there was no real lighting to blend the two. I know Square has pretty much been scraping he bottom of the barrel when it comes to talent and good game ideas the last decade or so but this is really, really bad, even for them.

I can't think of anything Square Enix has made that has truly interested me in a long, long time. I forced myself to play through the FF7 remake (which at least didn't suck), but I don't think I've been excited by a SE game since Kingdom Hearts 2.

It looks exactly like when I downloaded assets from the net for my school programming project. Whatever models were for free.

The graphics look significantly worse than when the first development trailers came out. Everybody pointed out how choppy it was, so it's no surprise that they severely toned down the fidelity to get it to run smoothly. That just makes the generic assets stand out more, though, and is a stark contrast to the horrible light show on screen during combat. Makes you wonder what the PC version is going to be like.

Dragon Quest XI and Octopath were two good ones. But those weren't made by SE directly.
