Flight Simulator X

I'm looking very much forward to this release. While I've always been pleased with the series, I'm especially eager to see the planned scenery improvements--that's why I fly, after all, to see what's down below me. I suspect many people feel the same way.

Even if it's not an earth-shattering change I'm sure I'll pick it up. Someday I still want to get a proper yoke like you'd see in a Cessna so I can get closer to actual flying. Ah, someday indeed...

i agree, id like to see much detailed scenery, and higher res textures. i wouldn't mind if it takes up huge amounts of space on the hard drive. I heard FSX will be DVD only, so less hassle of "please insert disc 11 into the cd drive"

lol, how many disks was 04? Wasn't it like 4-5 disks?
I am looking forward to a game, though it means that I will more than likely have to upgrade my rid, I will still get the game. What I did not like about previous versions are the horrible ground textures, ground objects and the fact that there was not something like "Career Mode" where your flying skills is an indication of your success. Flight Sim X is suppose to bring some of those things and ground textures on the screenshots looked spectacular, with movign vehicles, somewhat looked like bf2. Though I was the BIGGEST FAN of Microsoft Train Simulato, they have stopped making it :(.

I can't recall any flight sim that has had decent ground textures.
On that note, I am still flying in X-Plane v5!
The newest version (X-Plane 8) takes up 60 gig with the full install. I've seen the screens and they look good. Now all I have to do is part with the 60 + dollars to get it.
Flight Sim X looks like it's going to be good. I'll definitely get it when it comes out, even though I prefer X-Plane.
I'll take any decent flight sim. There just aren't enough.

I enjoyed Train Simulator somewhat, but I really liked Trainz Railroad Simulator from Auran a lot better. While it was fun to have real-life control over an engine, I was really searching for a "model railroad"-like game, and Trainz is it. Although I'm not keen on some of its aspects, it's a decent all-around program.

Back on topic... X-Plane certainly does look good too. I ought to demo that sometime. It's always nice, though, to see what Microsoft comes out with.

The new Trainz Railrad Sim 06 is it any good? I am thinking of getting it, but it is $52 from Amazon :(

On the subject of career mode...while I'm not against it I wonder how they'd structure that.

I mean, you obviously can't make it so it's realistic. Going from a C172 to a 737 or the like would take a LOOOONNNGGG time. People would lose interest. Of course, if you made it, you probably need to go get a real pilot license with a commercial rating
biggrin.gif

I wouldn't mind something a bit more arcadey in nature like recent racing games... say you complete certain tasks, save up money, and get a bigger plane. Of course, you couldn't get too ridiculous with it. I think if done right, it could really be cool.

Being generous, let's say you live in a well-to-do area that is deprived of whatever. So the oppurtunity for a pilot is there. You start off doing stuff like aerial photography, picking up the grandkids and taking them home to grandma... crap that gets you money for a new plane and isn't a total drag, without being TOTALLY unrealistic. Then say you move up to something like crop dusting, on to charter flights, maybe flight instruction (Lol that would be funny), etc. Of course that focus is totally different from what the MS Flight Sims have been in the past, and the way that they should remain, so it'd have to be sort of a side attraction to the game IMO.

Here's what I know-
Get video memory, the default textures are now 1024x1024 (a 4 fold improvement) The screenshots you see are done on a 3 year old Dell with a 256MB video card (I think an X800, but I'm unsure) under DX9. It will support DX10 either out of the box, or through a patch soon thereafter. ACES is waiting on DX10 hardware to play with! They have some very cool lighting ideas for DX10. I get the impression that FS X will be an initial showcase app for DX10.

Moving cars/trucks on roads :) much more road data by default, much more dense autogen. Generally limited to the USA due to availibility of data.

Afcad will be more capable with defining runway usage, at least from the capability of the product.

Rumors of MSP being 'detailed' this time.

I'd love to at least see semi-accurate road and highway representation. It'd be pretty nice to say, yup, there's where I live, right where that brown splotch intersects with that generated pine tree!

might be possible, i mean if you could do it with google earth...

im sure FSX would use the same technology as google earth to map the world as accurately as possible...i mean it IS next gen

Well, I caved in.
Just went to the Laminar Research site and got the 60 gig copy of X-Plane 8.

Okay. Now I'm ready for FSX.
Just a thought... I know street level data is possible, but I don't know if the average desktop PC could run it. I mean all the elements of a flight sim like physics, plus rendering landscape at a rate to give the illusion of speed. Once you add in street level detail... I guess it might be possible if you don't drop below 20,000 feet.

Nice I wanna do that.

It's theoreticall possible. All the textures could be preloaded, comressed/decompressed on the fly, if coded right.

THink of a space sim where you can fly down to earth :D

My question however, is the geometry. At least mountains and shit

LOMAC have good ground textures. But yeah FS series need a face lift even though the FS9 I use today isn´t at all comparable with stock FS 9 ;).

Hope not only Vista get DX10 or that DX10 don´t matter because I have heard because of anti piracy measures you are not going to be able to overclock in Vista...

A new release of FS is usually one generation behind the DX generation in graphics. FS 2004 is mainly DX 8.1.

I bet that FS X will be made mainly DX 9.0c, with one or two DX 10 features built in, just to sell Vista.

dude, I have MS Flight Simulator 1.0......loaded from a floppy, on a MAC, before Gates and jobs went two different directions. It still works fine. Talk about low quality graphics, stick line planes and mountains, differnt shades of gray for color FTW.
:p

whats the point of this kind of game? Explain to me please... do you just build a plane and fly it around? :p

FS2004 has accurate streets (USA Roads) for the US. Real accurate. They had the dead end road on my street. It's pretty good. Now, the autogen doesn't interact with the roadway system well... That's going to be fixed in FSX.

I cannot wait for FSX. That is the sim that dictates my next PC purchase (Core Duo 2, 4 GB RAM, 512MB DX10 Video card, 5.1 Sound card, yada yada, already have the yoke and pedals!). There are so many improvements over the last one. PEOPLE! YAY! Missions... I'm more into the flying for pleasure. Although the "gamey" feel will get a larger audience.

If you want a LOT more info on this, check out avsim and the avsim forums. The dev team hang out there a lot (along with a few other forums, but I'm partial to AVSIM).

OK, say if I want to get into it.. there are demos right, which one do you guys recommend I start off with.. and would a joystick do miracles?

There might be a demo, there might not be. Who knows yet. And yes, a joystick would do miracles. You don't want to be flying in fs with a mouse in keyboard like some do in more arcadish games *couch* bf2 *cough*

And yes it is very pretty. Here's to hoping its more optimized than fs9 was.

I especially like this shot: http://www.fsplanet.com/images6/fsplanet_com_fsx_65.jpg
and this one: http://www.fsplanet.com/images6/fsplanet_com_fsx_66.jpg

wow, those graphical changes are pretty crazy. this is definitely one of my top 3 most wanted games this year. hopefully it comes out on october 3rd like it's currently scheduled to, that's only about 10 weeks away.

My uncle loves these games, he does international flighjts, literally.

as soon as i play, i try to crash the plabes, but MS took that out of 2004 cause of 911 :(.

Anyways, if the graphics as THAT good, i may actually try ti

But think now, if flight SIm X looks atht good - i cant WAIT to see MS Combat Flight sim!! as i am sure it will be all off the same engine :D

p-51 mustang here i come!

I remember a flying game called megafortress in the old DoS days. What was fun was that you actually had to go through the actual (or as close to it) steps to start/power up and take off the B-52 you were in. Meanwhile your base where you were at was under attack. Haven't seen a huge amount of games like that lately.
That said, i'll probably end up getting FS X.... :D

I'm really into FS9 (2004) currently and am pretty excited about FSX. I'm hoping they add ramp activity at the airports (baggage trucks, catering, plowing), as well as keeping it as develop-able as before (add-on aircraft, editable AFCADs, AI, SquawkBox online flight). So far, its lookin great!

That much has been confirmed. And the missions look like they could be a lot of fun. A nice break from what is, for me, practice. Check out gamespot, I think they have some good videos for fsx.

Also, I wish they would concentrate a little more on making the sim more realistic. I think it's great that they're adding missions (looks fun as I said) and making the game look better. But I think fs9 already looks pretty good in its own right.
FS92005-10-1917-43-16-15.jpg

All I'm saying is that I wish they would put a little more effort into making the game more realistic for enthusiasts. Read: realistic and modeled failures, iciing condiditions, new ATC with support for realistic departures (SIDs) and approaches (STARs), better AI plane control (goes with new ATC), and so on. I'm not saying I don't like what they're doing. I just wish they would do more. Maybe next time :(

Those sound good. I'm also hoping they would fix that glitch in FS9 when you are above the clouds, you can see clearly to the ground, but when you descend through it, the clouds re appear.

It looks alright. I wonder if it will be another SWAT 4-ish game where you can force 8x aa 16x af in nvidia control panel and make the game look awesome. :)

P.S. Will you be able to crash in this game? Not being able to nose dive in 2004 took a BIIIIIG chunk of fun out of the game for me. :(

I've always managed to crash any plane in FS9. The default planes also have locational damage, meaning if you clip a building with your right wing, the right winf breaks off and you spin into the ground.

I was trying to run it into the ground but I bounced up and rolled right through buildings etc. ?

Probably had crash/collision detection off.

I will never understand people that get the game just so they can crash...

QFT. Flight Simulator... Key word is FLIGHT. Staying in the air! For those of us that "get it", the Flight Sim series is a great franchise. It has a lot of customization to be done, from scenery to flight dynamics to custom airplanes. FSX should have much more!

Wouldn't you agree that learning to fly also means learning how to control the aircraft during a catastrophic event?

I'll admit though, crashing is fun, especially when you just want to have a quick game.
