Finally ordered....XP-120..got some questions...

M'yep, as the title says I finally got around to ordering my Xp-120.

I got the Panaflo 120x38 High Speed 104 CFM fan with it and some Arctic Silver #5.

I do have though. What do I remove the old compound from the processor with? I've never odne this so I am not sure how to go about removing the old HS and fan and removing the old compound.

Once I get the old compound off, what do I use to apply the new compound with and how much do I put on? I only got a small 3.5 oz. tube of Arctic Silver.

And third, do I need to be aware of anything with the XP-120 that I should need to know?

It's going on my Asus A8V Deluxe with 1 gig of Corsair memory a BFG Tech Geforce 6800 GT OC and an Audigy ZS 2 Platinum Pro.

Think I'll have any fitment issues or anything?

PS: Forgot to mention its a 939 pin A64 3500+ AMD CPU.
 
I just bought one too for my FX-53 going to install it this weekend. Also have the same board as you. To get the old thermal compound off use 91% rubbing alcohol, comes off real easy with that. Use a think piece of plastic or a razor and spread a very fine layer over the top of the cpu. Just enough to barely cover it. Then put the heat sink on.

I am debating however I need to remove the motherboard from the pc or installing it while its still in the case.
 
I'm probably going to take the computer apart to install it.

As for my case, beats me. It's an old server case I had laying around. It was originally my brother's it's old and neither of us remember what it is.

If I have case issues witht he HSF then I'lll go get a new case. Just dunno what I'd want.

So alcohol is all I'm going ot need then? Good.
 
Look at the artic silver site for their recommendations on how to install the AS5. The poster who told you to apply the AS directly to the cpu was right and wrong. I think according to AS, you are supposed to apply a dollop of the stuff to the middle of the IHS, and then seat the heatsink on top of it (therefore spreading out the goop). When you are using a processor such as the Athlon XP which does not have an IHS, then you apply a thin layer directly to the CPU with a credit card or razor.

if you try both methods, tell us what u think.

i am still unsure if using the creditcard to spread is better, or putting a dot in the center and letting the weight of the heatsink do the job (as recommended by AS) is better
 
I'm going to end up doing the dollup on the heatsink since when I originally got the A64 the thermal compund was on the bottom of the heatsink.

I'll let you know my finidngs. If I take the old HSF off the A64 and see that the compound was originally applied different on it then I'll go the other route and let you all know what I find. I should have my Xp-120 byt wensday of next week I hope.

The heatsinks that come with cpu's are produced in mass quantities, and they apply the thermal compound to the heatsink not because it's better, but because it's cheaper.
 
If you just put some in the middle and let it spread on its own, you're supposed to do it on the HEAT SPREADER, not the heatsink...
 
Sorry, I was confused by Heatspreader and heatsink....

It'll be going on the heat spreader on the processor...again...I'm sorry.

Yah AS5 just tells you to place a small rice size portion on the heatspreader. When u buy a retail cpu however on the bottom of the heatsink it is spread over an area so that it completely covers the cpu. I just feel better when I spread it all over the chip. The whole point of the stuff is to fill in the tiny imperfections in the heatsink and heatspreader so there is no trapped air between the two.

On the AS5 link it says for AMD it's a rice and a half sized dollup. I'm guessing AMD's are a little larger than Intel? It's been a while since I pulled apart an Intel.
 
Yeah, with my XP-120 I just squashed the dot, and it's runnign fine....and much easier than spreading AS5 around :D And to take it off 91% rubbin alcohol from like, Rite-Aid or Wal-Mart will kick it's ass.

Enjoy your XP120, I know I do.....Just put a little 1 1/2 size of a grain of rice and mash it with the 120 before you latch it...and you will be fine..

OKay I just installed mine and I spread it thinly over the entire cpu. My idle temps right now are 37-39 about a 10 degree drop with the stock fan. My room is pretty hot around 75F. Let us know how much a drop you get using just a rice size drop of AS5.
 
all you need is a nice mound in the middle of the processor. i latched the smaller clips on the xp120 and then used the force from latching down the other side to spread out the as5. im idling at 37C and my room is 73C~

if you put too much as5 on there, itll act like an insulator. i had my 3000+ hitting over 50c at stock speeds, would hit over 60c with just a 10% OC cause of that. used about a BB sized dot of it, temps dropped 10-15c.
 
okay I reseated it using just a bead in the middle. Temps really did not change so I guess I did not put too much on by spreading in a thin layer. I checked the site and they say it takes up to 200 hours off running and not running for it to fully take affect and then it will drop another 2-5C. Thanks again for the help.
 
Freakin' thing was supposed to be here today, unfortunately the post office has their head up their ass so it's sitting in one of their trucks at the moment.

The kicker is that they have already scanned it in as being deliverd.

So, guess I'm gonna have to probably chaulk it up to being lost cause when I called the PO today they said it'd be delievered.

I wonder if I can get Sidewinder Computer Systems to send me a new one free of charge.
 
That's cheaper than what I paid for and it didn't even show up today like it was supposed to.

They scanned it at the post office at 7:30am but it never showed up to my house. I bet the fuckers lost it.
 
IMPORTANT :::

I've read a post somewhere that someone did a experiment of this.

The results were BARELY NOTICABLE. Maybe 1-1.5 degrees different. He said that the better choice one is the one with the grain size AS5.

SO EVERYONE.. TAKE OFF YOUR HEATSINKS AND RE-APPLY YOUR AS5 CORRECTLY. KTHX :)
