well its basically the topic...its my first AMD build and its pretty much a gaming PC:

CPU - 3200+ venice $190
Mobo - DFI lanparty UT SLI-DR $167
RAM - 512 Crucial Valueram pc3200 (grabbing a pair) $45 each
gfx - BFG 6800gt $354
hdd - Seagate Barracuda 160gb $90
case - Antec SuperLanboy $85
psu - Antec Neopower $85

All this paired with an xp-90c and a 92mm panaflo comes to $1291 and that includes tax+shipping. I WILL be OCing and i heard that memory was easy to hit 250fsb (thanks eclipse :) ) Any opinions/comments are greatly accepted :D

Looks good! You'll definitely have fun with that build!

For the retards in the house with 2 second attention spans.....please O' please some f'ing pictures.

edit: just saw the finalizing part....= no pics. I apparently greatly over estimated my attention span:D

looks good kinda expensive be i guess ull be satisfied with ur super mobo cuz i got a higher end cpu and a pretty decent mobo and u went vise versa

Take a pill, or go do something to relax would ya please.

by the way:

Your post had zero to do with THIS thread. That is a thread crap. Next time send that via a PM since thats what they are there for.

I figured I'd point that little gem out to ya' since you are so concerned with the forum rules.

yeah i went with the DFI 2 reasons: 1. voltage extreme if u know what i mean (poetry?!) and reason 2......man it just looks sweet :D oh and ive heard its pretty stable, not as rock stable as teh ASUS but at that OC capability its pretty damn nice

dude...spend the extra 100 or so and get a 7800....hehe, i know i am when i build here shortly.

TLV1: Pardon? I said his choices looked good. As in.. I did provide criticism. Positive criticism. My post was on topic for this thread. Does anyone else agree or disagree?

And you could have PM'd the OP asking for pics rather than name calling. I'm not trying to start an argument with you by any means. I am just asking that you please keep a positive tone when posting in threads.

omz: for the price range you stated, your choices looks good imo

well first of all, lets keep all this fighting nonsense off the thread...dont want it to be locked now
second, i was checking out the 7800gtx and the cheapest i could find was $480 from MSI but id rather stick with a 6800gt...oh and second reason, im building it for my friend so the budget isnt mine.....though when i do build mine im gunna have at least 2k to spend if u know what im getting at :p

**edit: thanks for all the comments/opnions guys, keep em comin :D**

yea that guy is right get a better card theres nothing wrong with that card but if u want max qaulity on bf2 on 1600x1200 u need more power trust me and 2 gigs if u can afford it but 1 gig is still doing good for this time period

plays at 1024x768 for his games, but he doesnt play bf2...mainly guild wars, warcraft3, and sometimes source

Hmmmm. Do you know how long he'll be using the system before upgrading anything again? (Mainly the video card.)

i'm not sure how long, but i think im safe in saying it will be awhile (prolly 1+ years) before upgrading the CPU. For the video card, it should be there for the whole time until he upgrades the CPU, if not, there's always the option of SLI....right now, a 6800gt should be heaven for him. He plays his games on his LAPTOP, yes you heard me his laptop. It is an Athlon XP (not sure of the core) and a RADEON MOBILE IGP 320M (i think that is what its called) well, he plays everything at low settings with 1024x768 and he still lags ALOT...starting to feel sorry for him arent you?

Wow. Then yeah, the 6800GT will be a night and day difference for sure! I think that's a good choice.

You're right, being able to go SLI in the future or just sell the 6800GT when it's time for an upgrade to a 7800GTX/whatever else is fast and affordable at the time will be a good move.

yeah, that was my original idea. However, how much of a difference is it between a 6600gt and a 6800gt? My other thought was keeping the price low for a 6600gt and maybe grabbing a 7800gtx later on when the prices are lower...or do you guys think it would be better to stick with a 6800gt and SLI later on?

Comparison. The 6800GT has double the pipes of the 6600GT, and will slaughter it in performance.

Depending on the price point of the 7800GTX later on, it would be better than two 6800GT's in SLI. And will draw less power from the psu.

What i would do is get the DFI Ultra-D instead of the SLI board and grab a 7800GTX. You can always make the Ultra-D an SLI board by doing a couple easy mods to it but that can be down the road.

that idea came to mind, but i thought nvidia had fixed this little glitch?? but anyways, there is also the budget concern. Again, it is not my money otherwise i would have really deep thoughts about the 7800gtx, but my friend doesnt have that much to spend so i think im gunna stick with the 6800gt and probably SLI down the road... :D

Well, all things considered, keep in mind that the A64 has an integrated memory controller. This means that bandwidth is better and latency is lower than what it is on a P4 platform with DDR2 and the external memory controller.

You could entertain the idea of using a memory divider in BIOS, which doesn't impact the performance of an A64, and get cheaper memory. Maybe a cheaper motherboard that is known to overclock quite well. With the Rev E cpu, heat is not really much of an issue, so the stock hsf would probably be okay for moderate oc'ing.

My 3000+ is oc'd to 2.4GHz and idles at 22'C with the stock hsf. I use a 150MHz divider to keep the memory at 200MHz while the fsb runs at 267MHz.

The money you save on a cheaper SLI motherboard, cheaper memory, and ditching the XP-90 (for now) might be enough to get a 7800GTX, which will help the most in gaming vs the 6800GT.

Good point. Go for the non-sli
DFI ut nf4 ultra d and save $35. Ditch the xp-90/fan..another $50 saved.
Hvae your friend throw in another $60 and he'll have the fastest vid card out right now (much faster than the 6800gt).

There 's always the EPoX SLI board if you're friend does want to stick with a motherboard that is dual video card capable. It's currently $8 more than the DFI nf4 Ultra board. But the DFI can be modded to an SLI board.

Good choice. Epox and DFIs were the two boards I only considered.

I'd switch out the mobo for a Asus A8N-E nForce4 Ultra at $109 (ZZF) and get a Fortron Blue Storm 500 PSU ($91 Newegg).
Why?:
-Sounds like your buddy isn't into building or O/Cing and just wants a steady higher end system. The DFI is way more mobo than he will use. The Asus will give solid performance with minimal tweaking and can O/C well if needed at a healthy cost savings. If he plans on SLI in the future then never mind.
- Antec had 2 PSU's fail the Tom's Hardware Guide Stress test. Blue Storm is a solid dual 12v rail performer with plenty of amps (16/rail). Plus it looks good and runs quiet.
- FWIW Corsair Value RAM isgoing for 2x512 at under $100
- FWIW 2 If he plans on 2GB of RAM in the future then get it now instead of later. That CPU won't run 4 Dual sided DIMM's at more than 333 DDR and 2T.
