Fear Effect, a long dormant franchise is getting a revival with not just one, but two games in Fear Effect Sedna and Fear Effect Reinvented. About 17 years have past since the last game, GamesIndustry.biz uncovers why Square Enix Collective is pursuing the endeavor. Fear Effect Sedna was crowd-sourced and is a real-time tactical action game and Fear Effect Reinvented is a remake of the first action-adventure title.

The original Fear Effect was released back in 2000 and its sequel Fear Effect: Retro Helix in 2001, respectively.

Check out the teaser.

"It's not unusual to see remakes of old films, or even - as technology allows - remasters to improve visual quality," says Elliott. "It's interesting to see how some projects follow an original game closely, while others use it more as a starting point. Both can work really well, but as with anything in games, it comes down to the execution."

If they release them for PC, then I'll have to keep an eye on this. I didn't get a chance to play the sequel, but the first game was a lot of fun and had a decent story line.

I was hoping it was a Mass Effect game in the F.E.A.R. universe which shows Peebee was really Alma all along.

How did you "not have a chance to play it"? You own a GTX 1080 FE. A PS3 and a copy of Fear Effect would cost you less than a small fraction of what your pc costs. You had your chance, its just that it wasn't a significant priority for you.

Meh, the system isn't worth owning just for that game. Plus, you can't do any photo editing on it nor display in 4K. The GTX 1080 FE, while more expensive, gives me much more bang for the buck than a game console can, especially since I use it for more than just playing games...I have to have a PC for the other things I do.

I used to own a PS3 but no longer do. Actually, I owned two. The first one (a PS3 Slim) died within two years due to overheating (a known issue with certain batches). Luckily, I had an extended warranty. The second one, the updated slim, was noisy, making it annoying to use for Netflix or Blurays. There isn't much on the PS3 that interests me in playing, nor worth owning a PS3 for, especially when I can get many of the same games on the PC and get better graphics and performance at a higher resolution (Metal Gear Solid V, GTAV, and the Street Fighter series to name a few). The Gran Turismo series is probably the only game I really enjoyed on it that I couldn't experience on the PC. As such, the PS3 sat and collected dust, which then ended up going into a closet for almost 2 years before I decided to trade it in just to free up some space. Neither the latest Xbox One (S or X) nor PS4 (and Pro) interests me, nor do most of the exclusives that appear on them. The only game system I have any remote interest in owning is a Nintendo Switch and, again, that is just for their exclusives. I do still own a Wii, but that is mostly for playing the classics through Virtual Console and the occasional Mario Kart.

As for the not having a chance to play it: the game came out during a time where I was working full time with little disposable income and taking a full semester's load at college. On top of that, there were more interesting games that came out around the same time on a newer platform (sequel came out on PS1 yet the PS2 was out) and the sequel had a lot of mixed reviews when it was released. When your income is limited, you had to be picky on what you were going to spend it on.

That's kind of irrelevant because Fear Effect would look horrible in 4k. Its much too low polygon for that type of presentation to look acceptable like it did on the PlayStation.

Is it? The original PS1 version would look pretty crappy on a large HD television as well, especially since the backgrounds were mainly just looping FMV, so I fail to see your point here. At least on the computer you could possibly implement some AA and scaling as well to smooth things out. But I would imagine the remake would look pretty good in 4K on the PC.
