External Dolby Digital Decoder options?

My cousin just got logitech X-540 5.1 PC speakers for his XBOX360. Maybe I shouldn't have, but I explained to him that he won't actually be able to get discrete 5.1 without some kind of decoder. What are the options for an external DD decoder? It doesn't look like the Creative DDTS-100 is available anymore...
 
Other than the DDTS-100 the only other product that I know of is another discontinued Creative product, the Extigy. Unless you can find them on ebay or the sorts, buying a receiver and adapting/modifying the X-540 outputs is the only thing coming to mind.
 
I think I would simply return the speakers and grab some z-5500. This would be the cheapest and painless option in the long run.

the extigy works and doesnt need to be hooked up to a pc to do this (i just sold an extigy on ebay today lol)

Tell him he's a dumbass for getting PC speakers for anything else, and to get some real speakers and a cheap receiver from a yard sale/craigslist.
 
Chill out, the kid is only 13 years old.

It seems like an Extigy from ebay is the best option. Any idea if there would be significant lag due to the DD decoding in the Extigy?

I don't understand why:

1.) One is forced to go to Ebay for an affordable standalone DD decoder. How is it that no one currently makes anything like this?

2.) Game consoles don't have 5.1 channel analog outputs for connecting to 5.1 multimedia speakers or amps with 5.1 analog inputs.. Would it really add that much extra cost?
 
Will the Extigy decode the LFE channel correctly and boost it 10db higher than the other channels?
 
I have an old technics standalone dd/dts decoder that does this. has a ton of configurable options as well. They aren't really sold anymore because every receiver now has one built in. The home theater ones were produced when dd/dts was new, because receivers didn't yet have built in decoders (only on the higher end models).

the model i have is the technics sh-ac500d. It hasn't been produced in many years, though.
 
I've also got one of those Technics sitting in a closet, as well as an Extigy. They work great, but the Technics is a better stand-alone product. And they do still make decoders, it's just that they're very boutique items now that decoding is built in to most recievers. For example the Outlaw Audio 970 decoder is a high end decoder and remarkably, for $600 it's considered a good deal. Outlaw does great gear for very reasonable prices, but it's still not cheap.
