External CD Drive as Primary

Is there any way to make an external cd drive function as the primary drive. The cd drive in my notebook died and I need to reinstall Windows XP badly. Is there anyway to do this from the external drive? Thank you
 
Making sure your usb drive is already attached to and recognized by the machine, and assuming your machine has the latest bios you should be able to just boot into bios at start up (F2) and go into the boot menu. There there should be an option to boot from usb or something like that and then you can just reformat normal from there.

If that doesn't work find out if there's a newer bios available for your machine (there should be a version that will recognize usb devices in the boot menu), flash it and try again.
 
yeah, if your motherboard supports it, there should be an option to boot "USB-CDROM" in the boot priority menu.
 
Many BIOS have support for booting from alternate devices at startup. F11 and F12 are popular keys for this.

This would allow you to to temporarily boot from a different device (like a USB CD Rom) instead of changing your system to boot from it always. It's also a quick way to just to what devices your machine is capable of booting from.

Read the options on your BIOS screen. If you don't have any, press TAB or ESC when your computer turns on. It should take away the graphical image and you might see the options that were previously hidden.

If that doesn't work, then you should be able to boot the disc as described above by changing the BIOS default boot device to CD instead of your hard drive. You may have to remove dead CD drive from your laptop to make it boot properly.
