Can a wireless access point act as a range extender? Say I have a wireless G router and a wireless G access point. Can I just plug the wireless access point into the middle of my house and use it as a wireless repeater? My router is on the 3rd floor and my computer is on the first and I do not get the greatest signal. Can I plug the access point into the wall on the second floor and boost the signal? How would I have to set that u p? TIA

Whether or not an AP will have a repeater function, or WDS preferable, will vary from AP to AP, Mfg to Mfg. Check out the specs of the hardware your interested and see. Your question has no yes/no answer. If your just talking theory, then yeah, you'd just plug power to the AP, log into it and set the repeater or WDS functionality. If you have MAC filtering or whatever on the parent AP you'd have to adjust accordingly on the repeating device. Same SSID and channel for repeater and parent AP.

I have the same question... but on a larger scale. (one block away) . Otherwise, I thought of using a four foot sat dish, not sure about this tho.

I would bridge two AP using directional anteneas. Theyare not that much money and you wouldn't be broadcasting a signal to the whole block..

I am thinking of buying a Linksys Wireless G access point(WAP54G). Nobody near me has any signal boosters or range extenders in stock, and I dont feel like ordering one so this was my other option.

Assuming there is line of site on the point to point, that is definitely the way to go. No outdoor repeaters, especially with omni's.

isn't there a firmware hack for linksys routers that lets you access settings / increase the transmit power?

I would purchase some high gain antennas. I too had the same issue. I am using a Linksys wireless B router in the basement hard wired to two computers. In the office, on the third floor opposite side of the house, an additional pc. The office pc was not getting a constant connection. I purchased the antennas and now have a full connection at all times.
