Exchange IS Restore from Veritas

Hey everyone. I have a bit of a complicated question. I have a backup tape from about a year ago that just has the IS store backed up from an exchange server. The original exchange server and AD are present still in the organization.

I want to do a full restoration of the IS, without overwriting anything.

I need to access user mailboxes for users that do not exist any longer.

What are my options? I do not believe a RSG would work because that requires the AD accounts to be present, correct?

I also have basically 0 hard drive space available on the exchange server for this restoration.

I can move the backup tape unit to a temp box and do a temp environment.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Exchange 2003 SP2
Windows 2003 SP1
Veritas 10.1 (d)

Thanks!

IIRC, there's not a whole lot you can do natively. I've always found veritas / built in exchange recovery to be lacking.

I use OnTrack PowerControls to do my exchange restores. The extract wizard gets installed on your recovery machine, along with a veritas backup agent. It emulates an exchange server and you redirect your IS restore to it. After the restore is complete you use PowerControls to browse edbs (pub or priv). You can then export individual messages / multiple mailboxes to a live exchange server or to pst. This also requires outlook to be installed on the recovery machine (uses mapi, but not the outlook interface). It's pricey, but it's been worth it for me.
