Cliff notes at bottom

I know i know, it's ancient. I built the rig nearly 3 years ago (it was a deal considering its lasting this long, but direct x 10 is starting to make it cringe) The first mobo was an epox 8rda+ (when they first came out) and then that thing crapped out. So i just bought an epox 8rda3+ (cheapest exact replacement) and its been on this mobo for about 1.5-2yrs i can't exactly remember when. however, i think the onboard lan has gone bad (the realtek one) or something. Here's the issue:

I am now at my first semester at college and was here over the summer (so technically my 2nd) and my computer was working flawlessly, i did a fresh format before arriving here at UF and everything was honkie dory (also picked up a samsung 19" 915N 8ms response - i <3 it ) man was i happy back then. everything worked. and the new monitor just added more to that factor. Okay, summer semester is over, time to go home for 2 weeks before i hike back up to gainesville for the fall semester. Over the break, my computer sat in my room, and only turned it on twice, once to show my sister my newly aquired music library (mytunes heh heh heh) and another time to transfer some files from ym brothers new rig. (age of mythology = sweet) so i continue on my merry way, get up to gainesville for the fall semester, and have been up here for about 4-5 weeks now. well 2 weeks into being here my computer was like blah, being rediculously slow etc. etc. basically it aquired a worm/virus of some sort that was in one of the critical system processes. i didn't feel like fixing it, so i tried windows update, going to SP2 (all this while i've been delaying upgrading to SP1 because i hear of driver issues and what not for mobile phone tools and stuff i use to flash my moto v635) so i try at first to repair the installation (like reinstalling windows without losing your files). That didn't work. I did it 3 times just to make sure it didn't work Each time i tried to update my windows to SP2 after getting the 30 other updates and what not. It would never go to SP2. it would crap out halfway and it was like it forgot to finish installing it. staying at "performing finishing processes after installation" for days (i left it on)

OKay. so finally i'm like f it. i've gotta format. Luckily two saturdays ago, my laptop was delivered (dell 700m - man i <3 it. and $750 off rocks) so i transfered the files i wanted o keep to it, and formatted the desktop. installed winxp pro, updated to sp2, installed drivers, transferred files back over (used my RA's external hdd) plug in the ethernet cable, get connected to network, but internet doesnt work. call the network staff for uf to see wat their input was. i was on the phone for an hour trying to figure out wats wrong. it wasnt the network, because it works right when i plug it into my laptop. the guy said he was getting alot of errors from my port when i plugged in my desktop, but none from my laptop(obviously) i installed the drivers from epox's website, didn't work, ran winsockfix.exe, didn't work. i dont know whats wrong with it.

CLIFFNOTES TO MY LONG RAMBLE:
fomatted computer > updated to SP2 > nic doesn't work, it connects, but i can't load webpages, or webpages half load (not formatted, pics missing, etc.) then it craps out after about 2 half-loads and gives me a "page cannot be displayed with DNS error or something" > installed drivers from epox's website (maybe not newest?) > ran winsock fix > nothing works.

I have narrowed it down to two things: #1 driver issue with SP2 - it was working before the format with sp1, after the format with sp1 (had to download the updates) and after sp2 i get crap. i get connected to the network but it doesn't load webpages, and the # of recieved packets is far less than sent (like 2k sent packets and 400 recieved)
or #2, my onboard nic has gone bad.shit. that means i gotta buy a pci nic. being a poor college student doesnt help, so i'm hoping for #1 and that its fixable.

is there anything i can do to make it so sp2 doesnt conflict with the drivesr ?i'm gonna try to uninstall SP2 when i have time (accounting is kicking my ass) but hopefuly theres like some 3rd party driver that no one knows about except for one person on this board, and hopefully he sees this thread.

Thank you, and goodnight.

I read the post, Did you install the NIC drivers?
Normally they are encluded in the chipset drivers on the CD that came with your mobo.
If you did not, the onboard NIC is not gonna work.
If you don't have the original CD, you could see if you can download the chipset drivers from Epox site.
If at last all fails, GO BUY YOURSELF A NEW NIC CARD, install it and install the drivers.
Then you would be good to go.
FYI SP2 has never interfered with any driver I have used on the past 3 systems.
I do not believe that SP2 is your problem.
When you formatted and reinstalled, did you ever geta message that there was a trojan or virus of somekind still on the hard drive?
There are some that a format does not remove them. I had one of these last summer.
