I have spent a long time ripping my hundreds of DVD's and now am ready for the next step. Currently I'm running a 4 terabyte NAS (need to expand as it's full) and an ATV2 with XBMC in the living room. When I want to watch in other rooms I just use my laptop. However the limitations are great and I'm ready to move on. Below are things that I want in the new setup:

- Ease of use at TV (ATV2, Orb, etc???)
- Remote access (we have a cabin and I want to be able to turn on the tv and watch all of the media off our home drive)
- Ipad, android, etc streaming from anywhere
- Live show recording (does not need to be in living room, my desktop would work just fine)
- Video selection from android or ipad list
- Wireless music streaming to stereo

I have a quad-core desktop that I can use to run media server software if need be. Also have an ATV2 but am not stuck to it. Free options do not mean the best, I want something that will work.

Orb sounds promising except that it can't do HD. TVersity sounds great if there is a good client to run at remote locations. Let me know what you think...
 
I should also mention everything is very well organized and thanks to Ember all of the scraping is already done.
 
You're going to need multiple tools for different results. For watching shows on your television, I'm assuming you have a media center computer. You'll want to use XBMC or Windows Media Center with MediaBrowser plugin for easy access to your movies.

For your iPad and iPhone, it's been a couple years since I played around with that idea. I also used Orb, but it only worked with video formats such as mpg, wmv, and so on. Ditto sound formats like mp3 and aac. But Orb doesn't do Video_TS and BDMV folder format which is why I gave it up. So I'm not sure what's available to stream videos to iPhones and iPads at the moment.
 
Plex is good for remote stuff and scraping isn't bad either...its android support is pretty darn good too, don't know about iPad.
 
Airvideo seems pretty apple specific. I don't have any itunes setup on my computer and even if I did it won't stream to android. Going to look into this further over the weekend. As for Video TS, I have always had problems with those folders so long ago I started using handbrake to convert them all to MKV files. That took care of having to worry about what could play Video Ts
 
Has anyone had experience with the Creston Prodigy home control systems? They seem to be a pretty good alternative to a full blown home automation system. In addition I think they would give me the control that I'm looking for throughout the house. Then all I have to do is find some media server software that lets me connect an ATV2 while at our cabin and we should be pretty set.
