Hi all.

I'm a consultant working for several customers. I usually need to connect to their computers through internet. Some of them use dynamic ips so I have to call on them to ask for the ip to be able to make the connection ....

I wonder if there can be an "automatic" solution for this... :confused:

I don't want to use no-ip or dyndns, as they will always have all my customers IP! I imagine something that sends me the new ip every time it changes ;)

I remember there was this nice program called IP monster that automatically emailed you whenever the IP changed. I think they went kaput or sold.

Simply having a customers IP is not a security risk provided you have properly secured their firewall. Seriously, save yourself some headaches and simply use a dynamic DNS service or have those customers convert to static IPs.

I used to have the same problem. I found a program that mails me the dynamic IPs of my customers. This program has to be installed in one Windows PC in the customer network. Works OK.

Depending on how much trust there is in the relationship, you could set them up on a vpn to your network. Then, when you need to access their data, you simply turn on the proper routing for that customer.

Pros:
  • Highly secure
  • No need to know customer's external IP address. Their machine/s will be contacting yours, a known IP address
  • Easy on the customer
  • Easy on you ( after initial setup )
Cons:
  • There is always the potential for you to access their data
  • Overkill for small situations
  • Have to be careful about the routing to prevent access from one client to another through VPN

Specifically, I was thinking of openvpn. You could set it up so that, while they are always connected to you, there are no routes by default. When you need to access their network, you "turn on" the proper routing, then turn it off when you are done.

Depending on the client's setup, you could even just have an icon on the gateway's desktop that would bring the tunnel up or take it down. So when they needed you to access their system, just have them double click on the icon ( essentially activating the tun device and starting the openvpn service ).
 
I guess hackers prefer DNS or static IP to attack. A changing IP could ruin their job when it changes...

Thank you John! Now I have 3 customers using this programs. I always have their IPs in my mail, so I just use vnc or pcanywhere independently. I'm going to extend this to al the others!

Wow that's funny, they joined near the same time, only posted in this thread, made the same extensive use of the "title" of replying to a thread (Which not maybe people here at the [H] do) ... ban'em!

EDIT: I went ahead and removed the links. More than just pimping on the forums, they are trying to get backlinks to rank higher in google and the least we can do is deny them that. See, they realize they will be banned if discovered, but if they hit enough forums, get enough links going (making sure to quote the link for extra good measure) and they got what they wanted out of the deal.
