OK, I am getting ready to setup my HTPC within the next few weeks (gotta finish up my custom case) and I have come to the conclusion that I want to take a lot of my current DVD's and rip them to my hard drives. I prefer to do this with a lot of them rather then have to change DVD's all the time plus I have 3 or 4 that are scratched and I wanna back them up before they aren't readable. I was suggested DVD Shrink by someone but that doesn't get past encryption. Now I know a lot of you here do this, so I am curious as to what programs I need on top of DVD shrink and what else you guys suggest.

Are we supposed to discuss this here?

All Legal Owned DVD's can be backed up using a combination of free software.

DVDShrink is the 2nd part of the equation, after the full length disk is on your hard-drive already. Basically, it does exactly what it says, Shrinks DVDs. Since most DVD's you get are much larger than the 4.7g on a single-layer DVD-R disk (or +R, or whatever) it will compress the disk to fit on the smaller size.

I'll let someone else post the 1st program, as I think we're getting into very questionable territory talking about this on the forums...

There's nothing wrong with backing up any media you own.
Visit www.doom9.org for an excellent wealth of information about backup solutions.
If you aren't concerned as much with video quality use their auto-gordian knot. But if you want it to be as close to the source as possible use one of their other guides that uses DVD Shrink or DVD Rebuilder/Cinema Craft Encoder. There are quite a few possiblilites just read up and see what you think is best.
