I know if you move from single to dual CPUs that you need to update the HAL on Windows, but if I move from a dual to a quad system do I also need todo this?
 
What version of Windows? The HAL is the same (multiprocessor HAL) but XP Pro only supports 2 CPU's.
 
OS would be 2003 server, forgot that, still waiting on the coffee to kick in :)
So it would just be a case of a reboot and the correct CPUs - nice.

I'm not 100% sure. The only 2003 Server's I built already had 4 CPU's. I don't know if you'll have to do anything special to enable them, but IIR it's not all that hard.

No, as the multi processor HAL on the Server OS is the same no matter if you are running 2 or 4 processors.

I agree.
I've added 2 more proc's to a 2-way Win 2K box and 2 more proc's to a 4-way 2003 Server without having to make any HAL changes.

XP Pro support two physical processors with two logicals on top of that.
Server 2003 Standard supports four physical and four logical.
Server 2003 Enterprise is eight and sixteen.

And yes, that's how it works. Just enable HT in the BIOS and you're smokin'

0-31 are all options, but you can only check them if you have the actual processors.
