Drop shawdown on pattern background

I have a text on a website that uses drop shadow. However, that text is on top of a background that is a pattern.

How can I have the image just generate the drop shadow on the background image I set in the HTML? I'm not sure which file type can do that, but I think it can be done.

My only other option is to line up the background with the background of the text, that sounds unbelievably hard.

Any help would be appreciated.

Nevermind. I swear I tired a .png last night and it didn't generate the shadow correctly. But it did work.

Transparent gif?

that would be my suggestion if you 're still supporting users with older browsers. PNG transparency doesn't play nice with IE6 or below without applying some hacks.
