So there is a poll going on a site I visit occasionally and they had a sweet 16 march madness style competition between some phones, it looks like the pre has double the votes of the droid.

[H] readers seem all about the droid or whatever is the latest phone so where is all the discussion about the pre?

Android has more Apps than WebOS for sure. I almost bought a pre plus, but the lack of apps, Palm's future (see back to apps and app development), a GPS bug with the Pre Plus (couldn't get info if it was fixed with 1.4), and some other things just made me go with an Android phone. Seems to be more of a known commodity.
 
Android phones are all about hardware, because AndroidOS is nothing compared to WebOS

It definitely looked nice, but the hardware isn't as good. Battery life is terrible for one. It's significantly bulkier also. I would try WebOS if it came on a better phone.
 
I was excited to be settled on a phone choice when I saw all the votes on that site lean towards the pre, especially since the price and plan really suite my family needs (i want two phones).

sounds like it is not going to be getting much app love.

From what I've heard it is fairly easy to port apps made for the iPhone over to WebOS. So maybe that will help them out. Short term though, there's still not as many apps out there.
 
I was pretty excited about the Pre when it came out, I was downright ready to jump on it when it came to AT&T (happening soon it seems)... But the lukewarm reception it's received amongst the app dev community, the build quality issues, and the battery life complaints have turned me away from it. I could probably overlook just two of those things, but all three plus Palm's questionable future is too much.

Then again I'm w/AT&T right now (out of contract) and my only other viable choice is Sprint (T-Mo has no 3G down here and Verizon doesn't even exist), so I'm playing the waiting game anyway, hoping AT&T comes out w/a decent Android phone (e.g. HTC Desire) before Sprint's new phones start rolling out (Nexus One, EVO, etc.).

I guess a hardware keyboard is a pre-requisite for ya, so the Droid's probably your only real choice right now if you decide to go w/Android. I actually wanted a hardware keyboard as well but I'm willing to compromise there for something like the HTC Desire, just sick of waiting tho. Damn you AT&T, stop butchering Android phones and playing everything so close to the vest!
 
It's a PITA to develop for Palm and not just because of having to set up on a whole new platform... So little footprint, so little market share.

The amount of time spent on developing vs. possible returns just don't justify the investment.
 
Had a pre (sprint, not plus) and went through 6 in 3 months (I'm in construction management), all issues were because of cheap shitty hardware. Switched to the Droid (Verizon) and have had this phone for 6 months with no issues at all. I beat on it just as much but the hardware is wayyyyyy better.
 
The problem is most people don't have both and usually only one. If they've had a good experience they'll easily recommend the phone they are using whereas if they've had an issue, they'll say to avoid it.

My advice, would be to go to a Verizon store where you can physically play with working devices. Then you'll be able to make an informed decision.

I obviously voted Droid btw as I am in love with mine (coming from a 1st gen iPhone).
 
^^^ I don't know who was voting, but the Pre Plus being better than the Droid is a stretch on the Pre's best day.

Ahh, my bad, I'm surprised it won over there tho... Maybe a lot of WebOS fans congregate there. :p Truth be told, I'd probably pick neither, the Droid is nice but a lot of people complain about the keyboard... Personally if I go for a physical keyboard I'd like a vertical one like the Pre's so it's usable with one hand but that form factor seems to be losing popularity.
 
i have minor issues with the physical keyboard (really miss the keyboard on my LG Voyager), but overall it works as long as you don't have long nails and the soft keyboard is decent too.
 
The Droid keyboard takes about 4 days of getting used to before you're proficient, after that... off to the races.

Where ever your getting some "high votes for a palm phone", then THATS where all the discussion would be for the phone, over on some insignificant forum thats oblivious to the power of Android.

WebOS is still an evolving OS... The limitations make it seem like its still a beta...
 
I highly suspect those Laptop Magazine poll results were intentionally skewed by Palm and/or Verizon to move all the Pre stock that's sitting on warehouse/store shelves doing nothing. Droid was Engadget smartphone of the year (and won other categories as well), so don't try to pull a slick one on us Verizon/Palm, people tend to see right through that BS.
 
sorry but I like my pre. It has worked well and has surprised me with how good it is getting. Someone said the WebOS is still evolving. How is that a bad thing I got up this morning and took my pre off my touchstone and it updated last night. I now have Flash in my web browser. If your OS is not evolving then it is dead. Hence Android 2.1. That is also evolving.

I know there are not a lot of apps out there but the ones they do have are covering the bases for me. I do use a lot of homebrew apps as well though so there may be a lot of apps out there that you do not know about yet. I know the iphone has tons of apps but how many do the same thing? look at the amount of shopping list apps out there.

Most people would say the Pre and WebOS in general is well done. However, if they had to choose between the Pre and the Droid, they'd take the Droid. If someone gave me a Pre Plus, I'd definitely use it, but when it comes to actually handing out my own money, I went with a Droid.
 
I am not saying that the droid is a bad phone all I meant was the Pre is much better than it is being portrayed in this thread.

I have a Pre on Sprint. I bought it right before the Hero was released. I prob would have gotten the hero over the Pre if that choice was available at the time because I knew a bunch of people on t-mobile who own g-1s and really liked the operating system. I went with Sprint because of the pricing plans they had and since they don't charge for cell to cell calls no matter the carrier I figured it was a good deal.

That being said I have had a great experience with the Palm Phone and just wanted the people who may or may not purchase a palm product to know it is a well thought out OS and a fun phone to use. I liked the way that it handled things automatically that I had not really thought about. I love the home brew apps that allow me to use it as a wifi hot spot. I wouldn't recommend you pay for the Verizon app since they charge for it and you can just download mytether and not pay a monthly fee for it.
 
I'm considering getting my wife a Pre+ when her upgrade is due this Friday. I have a (rooted) Droid and couldn't imagine a better phone for myself and the wife has seen what I can do on it and wants one for herself too. But I just think that the Droid would be a tad too open or complicated for her to use. He's not a techie/gadget person at all and mostly will be texting/talking on it. That's why I just wanted to get her like an EnV Touch or something so I didn't have to get a data plan. Also, that keyboard for the Pre+ doesn't look very comfortable to type on, but I have yet to touch one so I can't say for sure, I'll know this Friday though. I don't think she'll like going to the Droids keyboard nearly as much as her old Voyager or EnV Touch either, as I didn't. I know she wants a Droid for the "oooh" factor, but I really think it's overkill for her to get any smart phone because all she needs is texting and navigation, which the Voyager does fine (hers is barely alive right now though, she's hard on them and is on her 3rd one, hah). One of the few incentives to get her a Droid is for Google Latitude so I can keep tabs on where she's at 24/7, lolz (j/k).
 
have had the droid for a hawaii vacation, it was great, gonna get the fiance a palm pre. we share an account so i might as well have her have smartphone capability for the price we pay anyway(currently she has a lg envy2, good txting phone not a smartphone it's what i upgraded from).
i'm getting the pre for her because, she like me will only use a phone w/ a physical keyboard.
she's gonna be upgraded to a blackberry for her work phone soon.
so i figured why not do the pre, that way i'll really have all the cool keyboarded phones to play with!
plus i don't think she likes the droid, i mean she liked using it in hawaii, but thats because it was our only internet link.

Palm's on a death watch. If they go under, there's a good chance the phone will never see significant updates and upgrades.

Someone will buy what's left of Palm. As stated earlier, WebOS is pretty nice. I'd imagine Nokia would be interested.
 
Palm has more IP in the smartphone area than just about anyone else. At worst, Palm will be bought.
 
The question is whether the purchaser is in it just for the IP or whether they want to continue developing the Pre / Plus under it's existing branding. If someone buys Palm that could still be the end of the Palm Pre as we know it.
 
Even though I prefer WebOS but it has to be the droid because of the hardware.
 
Interesting expirience I had over the weekend while I was out getting my wife a phone upgrade. After seeing me have my Droid for the last few months, she was pretty much dead set on getting one too. But I wanted to at least look at a few in the store before we decided. So I went in wanting to check out the Eris, Pre+ and they let me play with a Devour too. But when I asked to see a Pre+, the guy said "*chuckling* We sent all those back. EVERYONE returned it and we couldn't keep them sold." I was surprised since I'd heard almost nothing but good things about it. I guess it was just way too complicated/frustrating for everyone to use from what he told me. He said that's why they're so damn cheap cuz they can't even give them away. These guys don't get a commision on sales so there's no reason for him to lie to me about that, he didn't have a prob showing me the cheaper Eris and Devour either. Ultimately, of course, she got a Droid though... mostly because she's a texting maniac and needs a physical keyboard. I still wish I could have at least played with the Pre+ though.

Wow, you can OC on WebOS? Nice... still doesn't beat a 100%+ OC (550 MHz stock up to 1300 MHz OC) on Droid though ;). Therefore Droid is definitely more [H] :D.

So does this mean when someone purchases Palm my Pre will evaporate? The Pre exists he is not asking about future hardware from Palm he was asking about current choices. I would assume that one of the main pieces of IP would be WebOS and that would be a focal point of continued development.

I think more of immediate software development e.g. 1.5 versions of WebOS, etc. You might get stuck with whatever is out there in the short term.
