So, everybody seems to be upgrading for Doom III. Great
But, Im not. Im downgrading!
My prime PC has long outgrown Win98, so Im putting together a second PC for Win98 gaming.
I have noticed that despite new games looking better then ever before, they are less fun. With the obsession of multiplayer and graphics, we seem to have lost some of the oldtime fun.
So my new machine is gonna be just for the games I used to love. They may be old, may have crappy graphics, but I love um! Anyway, this is whats gonna be installed

MechWarrior 2
MechCommander
Dark Reign
Dark Reign II
Dark Reign Expansion (Rise of the Shadowhand)
Mechwarrior 3
MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries
SimCity 3000
Total Annihilation (and Core Combat, and Battle Tactics)
RollerCoaster Tycoon (possibly Loopy Landscapes/Corkscrew Follies)

These are games that were massive fun, and I miss them :(
Comments?
Edit: yes, I will be buying Doom III and playing it on my main machine. Im not INSANE, just a little nostalgic

Why not just play your colecovision or fairchild? Who even needs windows for gaming. Just pop the ol' chartridge in and give zaxxon a whirl. Doom 3 is a better game then anything you have listed. Go play it THEN tell me you still are fed up with new games. You are probibly buying all the wrong ones like any movie to game title (which I have yet to still find one worth the money). Go get Doom 3, Thief 3, Diablo 2 (for an "older classic"), or even GTA Vice City. If you really have a boner for those oldies I guess Sim City 2000 is hard to beat, and I will concede the point to you on that one. Just don't turn your back completly on the new wave.

^^ yes this has been bludgeoned into my head by this point.... we know.

and there isn't ANYTHING wrong with oldskool gaming..

Dark Reign was simply kickass... I wish I could find my copy...

You know in my current rush to upgrade to new equipment to play games like FarCry and BF1942 (not that insterested in D3 or HL2 I admit) (I have old old hardware right now) I have seemed to forget the games I used to play with this old Win98 computer with Intel i810's integrated graphics. It sucked ass with anything newer than HL. But good times. I played a lot of Tom Clancy games, most noteably 'Rogue Spear' and it's amazing online play.

To be honest up until reccently I was envoked in an old-school gaming trend that I sorta started with a lot of people I know after I got my old NES working. Nothing better than havign a a party where the main attraction is Mario 3.

mario 3 > Doom III
(even though I haven't tried Doom ]|[ yet) (ya, I must be the only 1 by now)

Heh, I did the same thing a while back. Brought out my first pc from the attic, an HP witha 366 k6-2, OC'ed it and installed windows fresh. Fired up the old Unreal and Unreal Tournament, Half-life, opposing force, Sin, Close Combat 3, Rogue Spear, Duke Nukem 3d, Doom95, Quake 1 and 2, Blood, rott, hexen, heretic. Ya know what would be great? Doom3 comes with all the old Doom games and wolfenstein! Well dang! I'm off to play some old games....

hey GL u wanna play a game of total annihilation multiplayer one day? 8 way with bots on the huge ass metal board.

I would but this machine is not gonna be connected to net (no AV, no firewall, no software etc to slow the machine down)

It seems so cheap to me to let the comp get a huge headstart. He can start the same time I do! I love skirmish :D

I know for a fact TA runs on XP, I am almost half tempted to check your other games. I have only come across one or two old games that won't

SO? who carse eh?

to be honest, I never really got into the second Dark Reign...im sure I can find the cd around here for the first one SOMEWHERE... ahhh :(

ive been playing doom1, thank god for the many 3d-based engines released, much much nicer than doom95.

i also have such great hits as heretic, tyrian, duke nukem 1, i have quake somewhere, and transport tycoon has a windows version which makes me happy in the pants.

Dark Reign was just plain awesome. I logged many hours into that game way back in '97. Can't believe no one mentioned the Command and Conquer series? I have every one of them that was ever made, even the original DOS version. Loved that series through and through, even though Generals was a let down. My favorite out of the series was probably Tiberian sun. Ahhh the memories.... Makes me want to build a retro gaming box too hehe.

youre joking right? I have always loved C&C but the only good ones were the original, RA1+2, and the generals series. TS was a joke.

generals is one of the best RTS games ever made. i dont care if the style is different, its still awesome.

Doom 3 will NOT run on win 98.

There is a thread floating around here of how to make it run in win98....not sure if it works, I ditched 98 asap;)

As for an old gaming rig, my friend has some old hardware, I am sure he would part with it, he has a p2 board, a p2 400(i think) and some older video cards. That is all you would need, then, some dos and windows 95, you got an old school box;)

It was OK in my book, I don't really care for the 3D engine, Im just old school CnC. I had way more fun playing the original series than I did this one.

got the box together w00t!
I totally forgot how much I love the originol mechcommander (only game installed so far), with 10+ hours played...
funny thing is the mobo isn't sending any power to the CPU fan, and its still completely stable...
back to gaming!

*MC > Doom3* for gameplay at least. D3 = fun, but MC = funner

Actually found someone to play online with. Took us a while to work out how to use Kali and ipx but eventually we connected and was good to play DR again after 3 years. Anyone else what to just us soem time on Kali let me know
*VIP* NYK

I think the games are pretty good these days, it's the other people online that are less fun. :)

And, aren't we creative when it comes to thinking of names for them...........
;)

I still think Total Annihilation was the best RTS ever.

It was deffinately the most ground breaking. First to have so many different features it was insane.
