Doom3 Runs better without Hyper Threading ???

Just for fun I decided to see what kind of benchmark I would get without Hyper Threading

System Config was

Pentium 4 3.2 Northwood HT

First test was 800x600 Ultra High quality With Hyper Threading enabled

Timedemo demo1

average 40.1 fps

Second Test was 800x600 Ultra high quality with hyper threading disabled

average was 50.1 fps

I don't know why it's just strange I would have to say.

p4 sucks at single -threaded apps, doom3 would be one of them

it might be multithreded but i havent seen the command to turn it on

Interesting. How are you disabling hyperthreading -- via the mother board bios? If so, what motherboard?

Also, try running the hype threading enabled timedemo last. I wonder if your reboot from going into the bios cleared up some memory. In other words, reverse the order of the test, and see what you get.

Uh, yeah. BIOS. I doubt there's any other way to enable/disable that (lol). BTW, HT does NOT work for Doom 3. It isn't optimized for that.

True -- but there shouldn't be a performance hit. In other words, neither benefit nor detriment. I"m still waiting for the original poster to rerun his timedemos in the order I suggested.

I would be nice to see more benchmarks on this. Hyperthreading is enabled in the BIOS setup. If you do a fresh install of Win2k or XP - the OS will think it's a dual-processor system. I believe another way of doing it is to update the drivers of your computer in Device Mgr.

I'm sure there's better information on the net about this but it what might work well would be to have a hardware profiles setup up for single/hyper threading for when you're interested in gaming or general desktop use but you'd still have to change the BIOS setting each time

What Motherboard?

Gigabyte 8Ik1100 (875)
ATI 9800NP

Got 31 fps at HQ 1024x768 both times...also ran the time demo two times to get everything cached.

Are you new to P4? Not an insult or anything, but its WELL KNOWN that HT makes apps that dont use it slower.

If that hits D3 or not, well it runs different on every single rig, even ones with comparable specs

Link please, to verify that "HT makes apps that don't use it slower."? I know there are SOME apps which run worse with hyperthreading enabled, but not every app (that doesn't use it) runs slower.

Hence the people posting in this thread with no difference in timedemos on Doom3 with HT enabled or not enabled.

of course, the people that are saying that it makes no difference very well could be video card bound. A faster CPU wouldn't help them at all...

You nailed it right on the head my son.... :) ;)

Okay I've done some fooling around with HT and this is what I've found so far on my Rig;

First My Spec:

Windows XP Pro SP1
Intel Pentium 4 3.00C Ghz w/Hyperthreading Enabled
Intel Canterwood i875P Chipset Motherboard
1024MB PC3200 DDR 400 SDRAM running in Dual Channel Mode confirmed
128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro w/8XAGP and Fast Writes On (Very Stable)
2 x 120GB Hard Drives Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM SATA 8MB Cache
1 x DV-W58E TEAC 8 x DVD +R/RW
1 x GCE-8483B LG 48XCD-R
Audigy 2 w/5.1 Altec Lansing ADA995 200 Watt

I have 30 process running before i run the game, Norton's Anti Virus and Firewall are disabled during play (I'm on Cable). The WinXP Firewall is always disabled. I also have the newest DirectX installed 9.0b I think, newest Creative Audigy Drivers and have Run Windows update. Also my hard drive is defragged, no spyware that I can find (Spybot/Adaware), so all appears good on my base system, a Dell Dimension XPS gen 2 BTW . I currently have a 1533MB Permanent Swap File on my D:\ Drive, none on my C:\ Drive.

Secondly I have Catalyst 4.9 Beta Drivers installed and in the ATI Control Panel I have a custom OpenGL config set up with the following;

AA = Appl Pref
AF = Appl Pref
Texture Pref: Hi Quality
Mip Map: Quality
V Sync: Default off
TrueForm: Always Off
Force Z Buff: Off
Triple Buff: Off
SmartShader Effect: No Effect

Thirdly I have an AutoExec.cfg file in my Doom3/Base directory with the following tweaks:

seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "256" (slight difference between 128 and 256)
seta image_cacheMinK "20480"
seta com_videoRAM "128" (128 MB card so..)
seta com_AllowConsole "1"
seta r_displayrefresh "85"
seta image_anisotropy "1" (Default under High Quality is "8", nice approx 5 FPS gain going to "1")

Tests Run (Best of 3 Timedemo demo1.demo)

800 x 600 w/HT
59.00 FPS
High Quality, VSync Off, AA and AF off

800 x 600 w/o HT
58.80 FPS
High Quality, VSync Off, AA and AF off

1024 x 768 w/HT (Ran with HT on only, sorry)
46.00 FPS
High Quality, VSync Off, AA and AF off

These are basically all I did, HT seems to have a minimal to no impact on my system with the game running, i'll leave it on as I like HT overall. Vsync on and off with triple buffering enabled had a minmal if any affect. reducing Anistropy form "8" to "1" seemed to yield good results with minimal graphical impact.

Based on the above I'll most likely use;

1024 x 768 High Quality for Single Player
800 x 600 High Quality fo Multiplayer

If ATI can continue to improve it's OpenGL API Implementation things should continue to improve .

These are the results on my Rig, sorry if it's a bit long winded but I hope it helps.

Doom3 is supposed to have multithreading support, don't know how to enable it though. if you could get that enabled you should see a perf. boost from HT

No, I don't believe it does. I read Carmack was thinking of adding it into the first D3 patch.

I got about 1-2 FPS difference but that could just be my other apps indirectly affecting D3 and not D3 itself.

For anyone getting more than a few frames a second difference, make sure that you turn off/disable all your other applications. If your running other software in the background, it could make a hugh difference in your benchmarks.

I misunderstood how hyperthreading worked earlier this month and was rudely corrected by other forum members. :rolleyes:

If you run a lot of other applications while playing (music players, virus scanners, software firewall...), hyperthreading should smooth out the game. If your only playing D3, it will probably not make a hugh difference either way.

Try it with it on and off, let us know but post other processes/apps that your running simulatenously.

if you want the ultimate performance boost from your D3 rig, disable ALL unnecessary services, clear the items in the registry that run at startup, and then change the shell that windows uses from Explorer.exe to Doom3.exe.

That should do it...although that's ALL you'll be doing is playing D3...and then again...depending on your outlook on it...it may not be a bad thing either...

:eek: You give me evil ideas of what to do when everyone is sleeping at a lan party :D

I tried this and noticed no difference in doom3 timedemos. I like HT too much to disable it anyway.
