This is going to be a desktop computer for HTPC purposes (with some very light gaming). I didn't want to spend any more money really. I would go with the gigabyte motherboard but it doesn't have a PCI-e 1x slot.

Wow, I guess I missed it. Changed to the GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H.

I've been out of the build cycle to long. Can anyone tell me if socket 939/940 coolers are compatible with socket AM2/AM2+ mobos?

I have not see a 754/939 cooler that won't fit on an AM2/+ socket (I am sure there are some). Most should be fine, especially if you were just bringing over another stock AMD cooler. As for the build other than the fact you could probably get away with a X2 4000+ and save $40 or so, it's perfect.
