DIMM slot issues?

I’ve been running a Shuttle SN95G5v1.2 (nForce3 ultra) for close to two years now with a winchester 3200 and 2x512 Kingmax PC3200 Rams at 2.5-3-3-6-1T, and it has been stable as a rock. About half a month ago though, I decided to finally ugprade and get an X2 4400+ and update the system to its latest bios for proper X2 support. It’s been running stable as usual for the past half month, but just this morning, the system completely locked up with fans turning up to full speeds and unable to be reset. I turned it off finally by holding onto the power button, but once I tried to start it up again, fans would stay at full speeds and fail to POST. I then tried to reset CMOS (with the paperclip and the jumper), both to no avail. Next, I took out the ram in the second dimm slot and boom, the system booted with the single ram left in the first slot. I tried then to put back in the other ram and it booted fine again, but after a few mins in windows, the same problem occured. I had to head out of the house for a while so I left the system on to run memtest, and about 10 hours later, I came back and saw that it had 66 errors on test 8. I loosened it up a bit to 2T and specifically ran test 8 and it was fine after one run, so I figured that was it. But then the same problem occured again in windows. I went as far as loosening up the timings all the way to 3-4-4-8 and upping voltages to 2.8, all leading to the same problem within minutes of booting into windows (sometimes even failing to boot). I tried both sticks of ram individually in the first dimm slot, and both worked fine booting into windows and performing some intensive tasks (also have ran memtest for 3hours+ on each individual sticks). Just then I tried to run memtest again with both sticks in at 3-4-4-8-2T @ 2.8v and it froze on test #5. I have also tried taking two sticks of 256mb pc2700 memory that I had in my old rig and it failed to boot with both sticks in as well. Is this definitely then a fault with the DIMM slots? Or could there be some other factors at play here?
