Forgive the noobish question, but is there really a difference between something labeled 'dsl router' as opposed to something labeled 'cable router'?

Not if you're talking about an off the shelf SOHO router (linksys, netgear, d-link etc), they will work with either. If you're talking about a router with a built in modem that's something different.

Let us know what your scenario is and we can help a bit more.

I've got an efficient networks 5871 'dsl router'. I've got cable, and was wondering if there would be a problem using this?

This router's uplink port is for a phone line coming from DSL connection. It's got a built-in modem whose line driver only works for xDSL. As opposed to a generic cable/dsl router which has a standard ethernet uplink.
