I just bought (last week) an athlon xp (barton) 2800+ and asus mboard a7n8x(? i think that's it..)

I'm worried that I would be better off with an sempron 3100+ (socket 754) and a 754 motherboard. I can still return them if i need to but I wanted to know the opinion of those more knowledgeable than me in these things.

Would I be getting much better performance with the sempron 3100 (and how much would a decent motherboard cost)? Also, does the 3100+ require ddr400? or does it only require ddr333?
Lastly, although it was announced today, when do you think it will actually be available through retail channels?

I realize its alot of questions, and that i'm a bit paranoid..
so thank you to whoever replies :)

i htink the semrpon would preform better. By how much I"m not sure.

ddr 400 is reccomended but you can run it at ddr333.

as for availability your guess is as good as mine.

I'd recommend going with an A64 setup of somekind if your going to be buying new :)

thing is, the systems i'm building with these are going to be replaced in a year or so anyway, so that little extra oomph probably isn't required (sempron 3100+ vs barton 2800+). And since its a 754 chip i'd probably replace the motherboard regardless when i upgraded to a 939 a64 chip in a year or so's time. additionally, these systems will eventually go to my parents - who couldn't tell the difference anyway.
so to save myself the headache of returning the products already bought i've just rationalized a reason to keep them.

i still wish i'd known this was going to be the sempron result 2 weeks ago though..

again, thx for your help and your comments

ah the wonderful world of confusing rattings.

The sempron's, especially the SocketA chips, but the S754 to an extent are quite slow chips in some cases.
Anandtech has a nice write up with the 2800+ Socket A semperon and 3100+ S754.

The Sempron 3100+ does have some nice benifits in gaming, (the on die memory controller really helps out), but for less memory latency dependant things, like content creation, or media work, the sempron's are not very impressive.
